The Role
The year placement was very enjoyable as it gave me chance to develop my professional and personal skills. It allowed me to gain valuable work experience, ensuring that my employ-ability chances have increased. I was exposed to how a large MNE works in practice and gained great exposure to the technology industry.
I always felt valued by my colleagues and wasn't made to feel like a placement student. I was treated like a regular member of staff.
I was given a large amount of education in my first few months and the support I received was excellent. My manager was always available for questions and this allowed me ti progress in my role quicker.
Sometimes it was a little too quiet which could get boring and towards quarter end it could get a little too busy, but in the main there was a good amount of work that wasn't boring but not overbearing.
In my managers absence I was responsible for her role as well (just me and her for the UK). I spoke regularly to senior people within IBM and also customers and was trusted to do so.
The skills learned will be a great help to my future employment.
The Company
As a team of two it was just my manager and I in our part of the office. there were others around but there was never too much going on, especially in my managers absence.
Regular reviews and organization excellent.
No official training, but manager pushed me to get involved with things outside my role and was supported by wider IBM to do so.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I wouldn't apply back for a grad role as there have been a number of redundancies and there doesn't seem to be any job security. Also the grad roles available are very limited and not in an area of interests due to the cuts.
The Culture
There was other students, but the social scene was poor.
Fair house prices and food/drink places.
Wasn't too bad, plenty of pubs and a couple of clubs to choose from.
None that I am aware of.
