    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement which was primarily down to the other interns I was surrounded by as it made the work environment less mundane. Correspondingly, I believe having managers that I liked and were friendly also meant I enjoyed my placement more. There were other factors such as the type of work which made it a less enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely feel valued by my colleagues and my team. I always get thanked for the work I do and I do believe it is recognised as I recieved 300 blue points from the VP of my business unit. Having a good connection with my managers also made me feel valued.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In terms of my support from my task managers, I would give a 10 for support and guidance as they allowed me to get involved with extra curricular activities and develop my learning at IBM. In terms of Foundation, being Warwick based I feel like we received less support as interns - we also changed EPM twice, and only saw our EPM twice.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am very busy day to day meaning I am rarely bored - I rarely need to work over time but the days are busy enough that they don't drag. There are some quieter periods and I am grateful of these to be able to do learning and give back

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility for my team and I believe without me the business unit would not have been able to work as effectively. However, I never felt I was given too much responsibility to become stressed. I asked for extra responsibility in the first few months and I did.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt a lot of Excel skills which will definitely help in my future career, I feel like I have picked these up whilst on the job and also knowledge sharing between the other interns. IBM also have a Think40 site where you can opt in to do various education sessions.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office in Warwick is dead, most days of the week it is extremely quiet, even at lunch there is hardly anyone here. The Foundation / intern community is very small as there is only 7 of us here. Generally, everyone you come across isn't positive about IBM either which brings down the atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It is organised very well. I had a really well organised handover, there is a 3 month, 6 month and 12 month review which allows you to communicate with your EPM. If you need help you can contact people in Foundation which will give you guidance when you need it .

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was education which was a type of investing in you - you chose different modules you want to do to develop your own learning, you can also gain accredited badges. Apart from Think40, that is the only training we receive. They also try cut on expenses which limits you if you're not London based.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Working from home

    1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • A lot of other companies almost guarantee that you'll have a graduate job when you finish your year, however at IBM you need to reapply and have several interviews despite how well you performed during the year. This year the types of job role are limited with no sales grad jobs, but consulting.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was quite nice in Warwick and we were lucky that we all have got along. There is only 7 interns in our office so if some people didn't get along it would have completely changed the atmosphere. Considering I have moved 3 hours from my home town, and Warwick as a town is very quiet, I am happy with the social scene but it could be more exciting.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fairly expensive, but I'm from the North so moving to Warwick was more expensive in comparison to Leeds - however, there is a spoons which is cheap so if we were to socialise we would go there. Anywhere else is very expensive.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There isn't a nightlife in Warwick, everywhere shuts very early and it is a small town which is predominantly over 40. Leamington Spa is a short taxi away and it is slightly better there, but there's only two clubs which are below average. Some uni students in Leamington but not that many.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a lot of opportunities for 'give back' which I think is one of the best things about IBM, they encourage you to get involved with as much as possible outside your job role - this is one of my deciding factors on wanting to return back as a graduate.
