The Role
Very good placement overall, lots of responsibility in a full time role. Good organisation to be a part of, with lots of other placement students also providing a good work/social balance.
Almost all colleagues view placement student as proper members of the workforce, and appreciate that you are a valuable employee with a lot to offer.
Support and guidance was always there whenever I needed it, and I was encouraged to ask for help and work collaboratively to find solutions to any problems. They also did not baby me, and gave me the freedom to work independently.
Always had lots of work to do every day, with a variety of different tasks that made each day different. They also provided many opportunities for me to get involved with side projects to add to my portfolio and keep my day to day work interesting.
I was surprised how much responsibility was given to me from day 1 at Vauxhall, with a huge amount of trust being handed over, handling important tasks with large sums of money at stake, and very impactful decisions left to my judgement on a day to day basis.
I have picked up quite a few skills that will help with my studies, however the experience that I have gained in this role is probably as important as the other skills learnt during my degree.
The Company
Was fortunate to be part of a very fun team, with a great atmosphere throughout the office.
Very well organised, easy transition period shadowing the undergraduate for 2 weeks during a handover period. Vauxhall also organised lots of socials during this time, and have helped keep track of my well being throughout the year.
I got the chance to attend several training courses, and other voluntary opportunities to gain skills and qualifications.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
There are several previous undergraduates that have been employed here after graduation, but I don't think there is any official post graduate recruitment programme here.
The Culture
Loads of undergraduates all in the same boat. Shared housing, and lots of social events organised, very good to have.
Housing was pretty affordable, and Vauxhall had links with several local landlords that provide housing to Vauxhall undergraduates year after year.
Luton nightlife is pretty poor, but you are so close to London, St Albans, Harpenden etc etc that there is always somewhere decent to go.
I got involved with a football club ran by a colleague at work, and there were some other things available if you seeked them out.
