The Role
I really enjoyed my placement and felt I have learnt so much in the year that I've spent here. The staff were all very supportive and friendly. The work that I did has taught me lots and helped me developed my professional skills. I would defiantly recommend this as a placement.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. I will be really sad to leave my placement. I feel like they helped challenge me, but were always there to support me if I did get stuck. My confidence has come on leaps and bounds since joining Vauxhall which is down to the friendliness of my colleagues.
I was given lots of support by my manager. He was always looking for things I could do that would benefit me and gave me guidance in how I could use certain scenarios in interview questions in the future. He never gave me admin work and tried really hard to treat me as one of the engineers on his team.
There was always something I had to do. I never felt bored and always just had a chat with my manager or asked for something to do if I had finished what I was doing.
I was given my very own problems to solve just like any of the engineers. They were completely mine from start to finish. I was given quite significant problems as well. We even got involved in planning for the new model which was really fun! Many of the jobs I did were quite important and I was always given the opportunity to report out my findings to management.
I think that I have improved significantly on a professional level and have learnt lots about engineering in the automotive industry. I have also learnt quite a lot about other disciplines too such as business and supply chain by being able to spend time in different departments. The main thing I have improved upon this year is my confidence.
The Company
The office atmosphere was really good, there was never a dull moment! From problems emerging to the line breaking down there was always something going on. It was really easy for me to get involved with some of the issues. The office atmosphere really was one of the highlights for me!
The placement was really well organized with performance management reviews scheduled to mentors arranged. The housing pack was great and the days arranged prior to starting were really useful too! The whole recruitment process was also very well organized. I had reviews often as well with my manager to check in with how things were going where he would ask if I wanted more to do or if I had too much work ect.
I feel like they invested in us undergraduates a lot! We had training days on presentation skills and respect in the workplace. We had access to hundreds of online training courses and also a great perk for me was I was able to learn Spanish on the side which was through Rosetta Stone.

Working from home
I would defiantly come back to Vauxhall! I loved the year and feel as though I could learn so much more by working here fully! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming I doubt I will find anywhere else quite like it! I do however want to work closer to home so am considering options nearer home.
The Culture
I think there could have been had I chose to get involved. However I love going home so didn't spend time at the weekends in Luton. There was nights out arranged and the handover period was really good. We had a party bus arranged , quizzes bowling, a summer ball and many more fun things.
The cost of living was the same as anywhere really! There is a really cheap whether spoons in Luton town center. It was only 6 pound for a pitcher of cocktail! Trains into London were cheap which is a good place to go out. It's only 20 minutes on the train.
There isn't really anywhere in Luton to go out, any club is a taxi ride away. Batchwoods was really good and not too far away though. I have heard Harpenden is good too. I personally never went out at night as I started work at 7:30 so needed my sleep!
I go to the gym quite a lot and see people from work there. This has strengthened my relationships with people in work. There were a lot of competitions. I won tickets to a British National Superbike event however sadly I couldn't go. There were always prize draws for football matches.
