The Role
I have enjoyed the work placement based on a number of reasons, but largely its down to its working culture. The culture at GSK is relaxed, supportive and multicultural. I have spoken to and worked with people from across the world and had the type of the exposure I wouldn't of imagined of having before applying. My tasks and projects have been challenging and developmental and I have now extended to the 31st August.
I started to feel valued by my colleagues and those I worked with from the first day. They welcomed me and helped me get up to speed with everything as much as they could, even with their busy schedules. As time past I felt more and more valued. My work is trusted and used. My team and our stakeholders all engage with me in a positive manner and have never devalued me based on the fact that I am an IP.
At first I wasn't given enough support I would say due to the workload of my manager. This presented a challenge which id gladly repeat again. I had to collate as much resources as I could find and learn about the service, my role and what we do. As a result of the challenge I learnt a lot in first couple of weeks which allowed me to make an impact much sooner into my placement.
Generally always busy and this grew as time progressed during my placement. Since the start of the new year I have had projects and more tasks come my way. I would either be given things to do or find things that need to be done. There isn't a shortage of either.
The responsibility I had grew exponentially over the course of my placement. It showed that they trusted me and had the confidence in my abilities. This made the experience so positive and as a result I have extended my time here. The responsibility has been quite a lot though and as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. It works the other way too. So you really have to be on your toes and careful.
I developed many skills over my time here. I have been on a formal training called ITIL and done many other courses through the companies learning portal. The tasks and projects I have completed have given me an understanding of the corporate world and what my skills are and how I can help. Understanding my value has been the key takeaway.
The Company
Pretty chilled and relaxed. Work was always being done and things move fast but the atmosphere was and is always positive and fun. Everyone loved to have a laugh and It's the same with other teams around us, so it wasn't just my team. Loved the fruit basket that always had fruit !
The placement scheme here has been going on for a long time, so they have a structured, tested and proven process for placement students. The variance you will get is what team you go to when you get interviewed and eventually either get a single offer or two depending on the managers in your interview. If the team you end up in has never had an IP the organisation can be bad.
The ITIL Service Management foundation course was a costly two and half day course that I was sent on to allow me to better understand what my team does. I also had a series of mylearning (the GSK training platform) trainings on various things from convincing stakeholders to SharePoint design.

I have applied for the grad scheme, so hopefully I am lucky enough to get it. I wouldn't of have applied if I thought my future prospects and development at the company were not good. If I am not successful In this process my details would remain in their recruitment database for the possibility of future employment into a direct role.
The Culture
Yes there was but within such a big building and a large workforce you can easily get lost in all of it. Thankfully, I had a few Industrial Placement students working on my floor that I spent time with. With the wider placement colleagues the social element was always positive.
I lived at home so I saved a lot of money working here. My oyster is a 18+ so we get a good discount on travel cards. The area has typical London prices for food etc. So nothing to add there. I would bring in my own lunch everyday to further save money.
The nightlife in Brentford does not exist. It is not an area for nightlife. It is next to a dual carriageway and the area is filled with big buildings and residential zones. It is located close enough to the city to go out if you wanted to but I personally never bothered
There are always emails going around about things going on outside of work but most of the them excluded complimentary workers like us and were only for permanent members of staff. There is a regular football game that goes on every Wednesday at the local pitches but other than that nothing.
