The Role
I have had a fantastic year at Intel. Every aspect from the level of responsibility and friendliness of colleagues to the opportunities for volunteering and networking was brilliant. Intel has a great intern community who are fully integrated into the company making for a great experience. There are even committees to enhance the social side of the year such as sports and social.
Intel rely heavily on the 40-60 interns they hire each year and would struggle without us. So much so, that most people do not know whether I am an intern or not. I regularly have customer calls/meetings and they view and respect me as they would a full time employee.
Despite being a virtual, my manager has been great. He has really cared about my development and has constantly given me more responsibility and exposure as the year has progressed. We would have weekly 1:1's to discuss my progress and workload to ensure it is suitable. This continued despite his heavy workload.
My schedule would vary from super busy to relaxed depending on the time of year and whether there were big events/meetings. This was great as I always had things to do however was not constantly stressed. It also allowed me to explore other areas of the business and shadow colleagues.
As the year developed I was given a great deal of responsibility, even covering for members of my team when they were on holiday. I was trusted with a wide range of responsibility that could have caused serious financial and legal complications had I made a mistake. Having said this there were also people on hand to help and the responsibility increased gradually.
I have learnt more this year than in my two years at university so far, what more can I say
The Company
While the office is dated, the people make the place. There is always something going on, from charity events to BBQ's to world cup sweepstakes. There is also a large number of interns and recent graduates who work together and all get on very well. The great place to work team do a great job of putting on small things to keep us all happy.
Intel hire around 50 interns every year and have done for some time. As a result every step is highly organised and Intel know exactly what they are doing. From the extensive training at the start to the team building along the way the whole year is very well organised.

Intel do not advertise graduate roles and hire solely from the previous batch of interns. As a result, there is no further interviews or assessment centres as the whole year is a big interview. The role is also a full time role and not a fixed term contract as with some schemes.
The Culture
The social scene is one of the highlights of my year here. There are numerous societies just like university from charity to sports and social. As a result there are nights out, sports events and pub quizzes throughout the year. We also had a weekend away where we all stayed in a 50 bed house in Devon for the weekend.
Swindon is fairly standard in terms of cost of living. For me Rent is very cheap having been used to London at approx. 350-400 pounds per month. Pub prices are also fairly average at around 4.20 a pint however there are a lot of happy hours and also 2 weatherspoons.
