The Role
My first few months were really slow and I didn't do much but about half way in I was given the opportunity to move departments and everything started getting a lot better after that.
It was half and half, some of my colleagues seemed to forget I was there while others we're really friendly and willing to answer all my questions
I had 2 supervisors during my time at Gist and I didn't really see one of them, but my second supervisor was really keen to help me and support my development.
My first few months I was really bored, but when I was given more responsibility I had a lot more to do, which was great.
Near the end of my placement I was given a lot more responsibility, leading projects, which was great experience and taught me a lot.
Gist gave me a lot of formal and informal training which I will definitely use in the future. learning about Health and Safety is something that every company needs to know and I have also gained skills in communicating to different audiences and in presenting.
The Company
There was an overall positive atmosphere while working at Gist and a lot of banter. The company is definitely male dominated but everyone was really friendly and supportive. Like any workplace I got on really well with some people and others I tried to avoid at all costs, but it was good overall.
The first half wasn't organised at all, no one seemed to know what to do with me. When my new manager came in things got a lot more on track and I felt a lot more comfortable to ask what I wanted to do and get out of the placement.
I think that the skills I learnt while doing my day to day role were a lot more beneficial to me as a person than any formal training that was done. however the formal training was really well planned out and I felt as if they wanted me to do well.
While there are future prospects, they aren't very appealing to me due to the mobility issues. Gist has depot all across the country and to work here you have to be willing to move to get up the ladder. On the graduate program you have to move every 6 months which doesn't appeal to me.
The Culture
I was the only placement student at the site and only met the other IPs once or twice in the year. I know a few others had visited other sites to meet with the IPs but I didn't know that I was able to do this, so I didn't see any of them.
I was lucky enough to live at home with my family so I had no living costs and I didn't really got the opportunity to socialise with anyone (cause there was no one here)
There wasn't much of a nightlife...
Not that I knew off
