The Role
I enjoyed this placement a lot due to the amount of responsibility and opportunity I received almost from day 1 which I was not expecting. I have run projects and events with major retailers and that's a great experience for not only along side your degree but for your CV.
Great team to work with and all very welcoming. I knew my important place in the team and I haven't been any less valued for being a student. I have the same expectations and deliverables as everyone else.
You get just the right amount of support from your manager. They are always there to help ask questions if you are unsure but they do not baby you. You are expected to take initiative and are encouraged to be self sufficient which is a great way to develop critical thinking.
Like any job you have busy periods and you have quiet periods- there seemed to be no in between! It is nice to have a mixture of busy and quiet to make sure you have time to get stuff done and to focus more attention on bigger projects. There have been some quiets days but this is heavily aligned with seasonality and product launches.
I have had so much responsibility on Placement that I wasn't expecting. I have been in charge of my own projects, supported on business planning and marketing planning and ran and delivered product training sessions in major retailers. I have a lot to talk about now when I look for my next job.
You are heavily trained on ExCel which is great as my uni hasn't gone into detail with that and its easier to pick up because it has more context in a working environment. I have been very with my training courses here.
The Company
It was a good balance of working and talking on table groups. Easy to concentrate and easy to communicate.
The placement was set up well for my role as I was just another member of the team who supported everyone within it. This meant I could work on lots of different projects with different people for a varied workload.
We were all set objectives on a bonus scheme which were specific to us and had different levels we had to reach which has created more focus throughout the placement. The training courses were of high quality and were great to have
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
I have enjoyed my year here and it has given me such a great base of skills and knowledge for the job and sector I want to go into. With this, to progress in my field, I would like to go to a more niche company to work on this category after the experience I have loved here. If you do a good job, then people can come back after university.
The Culture
Yes definitely, its nice to have people in the same boat as you. Everyone lives close together so easy to arrange things.
As it is in the south near London, there is a price that comes with that. But I do not feel like it was substantial at all. Much the same as I am experiencing at uni but with a few extra travel costs.
The nearest big town is Reading which is lively, you are also very close to London which is great.
I know that there were a few opportunities for football but not any other I can think of.
