The Role
Massively - it has helped me to gain a lot of experience at an early stage of my development. I was given a lot of responsibility to work and perform as an efficient function to a multi-disciplinary team. Every day was enjoyable as it was a constant learning experience that greatly benefited my learning in a fantastic environment
100% valued by every team member. By producing your best efforts they are rewarded with trust and further work and experience. Outside of work, my colleagues were brilliant and we regularly socialised during the week and at weekends. By the end of the year I had established really useful networks and relationships within the project team and the company as a whole
From the first day I walked into the office I was offered support, tutorship and feedback whenever it was required. Through regular performance reviews and informal discussions, my progress was constantly monitored and new targets set and reassessed by not just my line manager but by Mace's emerging talent team.
There was an ideal balance between being given significant responsibility and workload and not being overloaded. This allowed me to produce work of high quality rather than rushing through work to finish it. My workload increased throughout the year but I was able to manage this better as I became more adept at managing priorities and increasing my efficiency
At the end of my placement I was managing 8no. subcontractors, involved in the main-build tender and procurement and forecasting/reporting to the commercial director. The incremental increase in responsibility ensured that I was never out of my depth but equally constantly challenged to improve my work output and quality. I enjoyed playing a significant role in the project team
Getting relevant industry experience before graduating will definitely help me in my final year by applying the knowledge that I've gained in a practical sphere to my education. It has also ensured that I have a graduate scheme to target with Mace going back to University as well as a year of solid experience to add to my CV. The best thing is definitely networking and establishing relationships ahead of entering the industry!
The Company
Upbeat, positive and not too serious! There was an ideal balance between taking the work that we were doing seriously but also finding time to have a joke about. It was a great to be surrounded by different professionals and I was able to learn of each and every one of them
From the outset, Mace were great at keeping in contact with you. From the initial interview through to your first day you are aware of what the next step is in the placement process. We had regular meet-ups with fellow placement students organised by the Emerging Talent team to keep us all in contact which was also really useful.
Mace offer regular training events and during my year in industry I attended several legal seminars. Additionally the Emerging Talent team organised some training events with external speakers to talk to us about networking and communication skills. It would good if chartership training could be offered as part of the IP with talks from the relevant bodies and associated training.

Very appealing, the chance to come back to the project on which I was based on post-graduation is something I am attracted to. Additionally, the people who I have come into contact with have all shared my positivity around Mace. The graduate scheme is well regarded and the potential to progress within the company is visible from others who have been on the graduate scheme previously
The Culture
As part of the IP we were tasked as the placement cohort of organising a charity event to raise funds for the Mace Foundation. We managed to raise approx. £1k after organising a pub quiz and charity raffle. We also had regular social drinks organised by the Emerging Talent team
Living in London is obviously not cheap and going out isn't either! I spent a large % of my wage on rent and going out and saved very little during the year. That being said, the chance to be involved on a large project in central London with a company like Mace far outweighed the fact that I spent all of my wages every month. The Mace IP salary is also enough to ensure you can live and have a fantastic time in London
Working in the City meant there was an abundance of bars from Broadgate Circle and Liverpool St. down to Bank and across to central London. It was a great place to be as we often went out for a social drink after work and on Friday's before the weekend and meant we could walk to loads of different places
As part of the IP we were tasked as the placement cohort of organising a charity event to raise funds for the Mace Foundation. We also had regular social drinks both within the project team and as placement students. In addition to this, we had monthly 5-a-side football tournaments with the site operatives
