About You
I absolutely loved this insight week at Unilever and the programme was extremely beneficial in terms of personal and professional development! I was able to get a much better understanding of how a global business operates and the functions that make up the business. Furthermore, the insight is a really great networking opportunity- I meet lots of very interesting people, who gave me constructive advice on how to kick start my career!
I felt well valued during my time at Unilever and everyone made sure we were welcomed. Upon arrival, we were greeted at the train station by representatives from Unilever, which was then followed by a networking welcome dinner. Throughout the insight week, we were treated to a fantastic programme of activities and events. The effort that Unilever put into this programme was testament to how much they valued us as interns.
Throughout my time at Unilever, we were always supported by an employee representative, who we could turn to with any questions we might have. The HR team provided constant support throughout our time at Unilever and I never felt lacking in guidance. We were given lots of information before we joined the programme, which helped us to prepare.
For me personally, one of the best thing about this insight at Unilever was the array of transferable skills that I have gained as a result of all the networking event and activities. The networking opportunities developed my communication skills in a professional setting and the presentations greatly improved my confidence and ability to deliver a clear and concise presentation.
The Company
I cannot fault the organisation of the insight week. As it is an established programme that has been running for many years, it is well structured and tailored to the needs of interns. There was a good programme of activities, that balanced networking events and practical group exercises. Whilst we had a busy schedule, we also had the opportunity for 'down time' where we could socialise with the other interns in the evening.
There was a really great general atmosphere! Unilever employees were some of the most friendly and welcoming people I had ever met and I was immediately made to feel comfortable. There is a relaxed atmosphere in the offices and no one wears suits so there is not an overly corporate feel. I also got on with the other interns really well.
I felt very well invested in and there was a strong emphasis on our personal development- Unilever ensured that each one of us got the most out of this insight. There was no 'formal' training as such, due to the short nature of the programme, however all the skills sessions were focused on our personal development. The sessions were tailored at improving our understanding of how global businesses operate and demonstrating the skills needed to succeed in such a business.
I found this insight to be very useful for understanding what it was like to have a full-time tole at Unilever. We had a number of presentations that explained the company's ethos and values, as well as talks with current employees, graduates and interns. The programme was very insightful for understanding the company's culture and what is was like to work as a full time employee.
The company culture was very much demonstrated during the insight week. From the open plan 'agile' working space to the Ben & Jerry's café, it was clear that Unilever operates in a relaxed and open manners, Unilever strikes for a diverse culture and that was clear from policies such as agile working and working from home. Everyone was very positive about there working life at Unilever.
Before embarking on this insight, I was unsure of my future career path, however this programme has helped me to realise that this is a path I would love to pursue. It's opened my mind to different roles and business areas, and I was given plenty of opportunities to ask current employees about their experiences.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed all my travel expenses and food and accommodation was provided for us.
There were plenty of opportunities for networking and meeting Unilever employees. We meet a number of senior staff who gave us very insightful presentations on their careers at Unilever as well as having one on one sessions with line managers to discuss future career paths. On the final night, we had a wonderful dinner with member of staff which was another chance to network. We met with graduates and interns on different programmes also.
I very much enjoyed all of the social and networking opportunities!
Yes, we found out about a lot of activities that employees may get involved in. This includes a on-site gym, fitness classes and sport teams. Furthermore, employees are encouraged to get involved with charity and voluntary activities.
Yes, I would absolutely recommend this insight to a friend! I loved my time at Unilever!
