    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was given a high level of responsibility from day one and trusted to make decisions. The company treated me well and I was given plenty of support and guidance when required. Therefore, I would say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my job this year due to the responsibility and how interesting the project has been to work on.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated with respect from the word go on this project by all colleagues on my project. They were always there to help out when needed but also gave me important tasks to carry out on a daily basis. The HR team that have been involved have also been extremely helpful and always willing to sort any problems.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I have needed help this year, all experienced managers and supervisors and just general work colleagues have all been happy to help. Just a simple phone call or chat with someone more superior was all it took when I was unsure on what to do. They would even come out and show me what to do if I was still unsure so all support has been as good as I could have hoped for.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Extremely! I was never bored that's for sure and from the first day was given important responsibilities for a student on placement. This means however that I have gained so much knowledge and understanding from working on this job. The only thing I would say is that it has sometimes been too busy, but thetas down to the individual project and I think would not be the case most of the time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After work shadowing the previous placement student for 4 weeks that set me up nicely to take over from him. The level of responsibility from day one right through to the end of the placement has been high. I have been very lucky to be given this level of responsibility as it is the best way to learn and develop your skills quickly.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I chose a job role which was related to my degree but wasn't immediately the same. That said I have worked on the structural side of things which is very relevant to my degree and will be for the final year. I have carried out works to drawings/measurements, used models and actively carried out tasks on site which have been relevant to my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office always had a good environment and atmosphere and everyone was really friendly. There was always a good number of people in there and everyone was willing to have a laugh as well as carrying out their relevant works. Therefore there was always people to keep the mood high and keep people motivated.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall, I think the placement has been organised really well as they do everything in their power to ensure that the placement is a success. The HR team in charge of the placement have been really helpful throughout the entire process and are willing to sort any problems out with immediate effect. They have also been very approachable and quick in response whenever there has been an issue.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been on a few courses that have been delivered either on site or in head office. I would say that all courses undertaken have been relevant and will be useful in the future however there has not been that many of them. This may also be a fault on my part though as I was not actively pushing to sort some out.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future prospects with Mace construction looks very promising. They have offered a job at the end of the degree should you get the relevant requirements and grades. There is a really good two year graduate programme and opportunities to work abroad which are both well valued and of great interest to me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • From the company's point of view there were many sessions of networking drinks and good opportunities to meet and get to know other students and colleagues. However due to the placement students not organising things between ourselves, I think it was a little bit of a missed opportunity, but this was no fault of the company.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I worked and lived in London the general cost of living was quite high. However you get more money from a student loan for living in London and along with the wage I received I was more than able to cope with this. Mace also cover your travel expenses which is a big cost well saved and makes a huge difference.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife where I worked was not very good as it is not a very nice place. However a short train ride to Liverpool Street or via the tube and you were in a great place with so many options. The job was on the outskirts of North London in Tottenham but heading central there were so many options.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I think there were because as I lived and worked in London there were a lot of opportunities to do things outside of work. That said there were not really that many events which were organised amongst employees on my project. However, there were still some opportunities but there maybe could have been a few more.
