The Role
Overall, I really enjoyed working for a full year as a customer engineer. A great opportunity to experience the broad range of what customer engineering is all about. The work can sometimes be intimidating but I had to realise that knowledge can only be understood with experience and time.
First integrating was a bit of a challenge due to the work pace and some unavailability of some team members due to high volume of work. But I generally had great support from managers and team members in directing me on the right path. I had a fair amount of encouragements throughout the year and good feedback from the team
Excellent support during my first few months in apps engineering. Every team members give each other technical support as well as moral support.
Generally, most of my days were relatively busy. Sometimes I would have work overflowing and other times, I would get quieter days. In apps, work can fluctuate often but there is always some work to be done.
I was given high responsibilities for some projects, such as delivering turbochargers for production to customers. Some other jobs included being in charge on units returned from customers, raising some engineering work request for different activities such as strip downs, reliability reports, high cycle fatigue reports, ect...
I have gained multiple skills such as prioritizing work, project management, better communication skills/ networking. Gaining these skills will mean that I will be able to implement them into my work process and improve due dates with time management.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was fairly calm. Everyone respected each other and were happy to help others.
In general, the organisation of the work placement was perfect. Each placement students had their own desks and training programs were set up in order to gain a better knowledge of the fundamentals of what we are working with.
Training was available to every employee throughout the site. In my opinion, the first few months were the main challenges due to the first time as an apps engineer, the diversity of the work was sometimes overwhelming however it allowed me to keep in the loop and make sure I was part of the team while being proactive. I would say maybe providing a better introduction/role background to the placement would have been slightly easier to integrate and understand some projects and what is required to be done in a faster pace.

Employment withing the company are relatively high enough in order to continue business and better production launch. Application engineering is a role where it requires a lot of demanding work process and include a lot of supporting knowledge for both technical and business sides.
The Culture
I believe every placements has no hard time in socializing and getting along with not just placement students but also graduates, full time employees, managers and people from different departments.
In my opinion, the site is located in a small town so socializing was just within the work area however there is excellent transport services that can reach larger cities such as Leeds, York and Manchester less than 30 min. The accommodation I lived in was quite high in cost but overall, moderate living cost in the area.
The nightlife in Huddersfield wasn't particularly the best considering it is a small town but in my opinion, I preferred the traditional and authentic pubs around Yorkshire.
Great opportunities was organized from work such as a night out to get to know everyone at the beginning of my placement, bicycle rides every week, EEEC events which as voluntary work/jobs outside of work. Outside of work, there is a leisure centre which includes gym, rock climbing wall, pools, badminton and many more sports.
