About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the Insight day with BDO. All the attendees and staff present were very friendly and knowledgeable both about BDO as a company as well as Accountancy as a career. I also found the short Q & A's with the current Graduates and School Leavers to be very useful in helping me to find out more.
I felt extremely valued during my time at BDO, there were always several HR or Recruitment staff on hand at every event to take questions and make sure everything ran smoothly. Everyone was made to feel very comfortable and it was a fantastic week in terms of the students getting on learning what they wanted to.
As this was a 1 day insight programme, we did not need any specific support or guidance, however I found that all of the organisers of the day were extremely approachable, happily answering any of our questions. This allowed me to find out everything I wanted to know about both the company and the industry.
Over the course of the day, my knowledge of the industry certainly improved and the Q &A with staff members about their experience with applying was very helpful. Working with a team for a short period to create a presentation brought up some reflection opportunities, ie how I work in a group and how that could be improved. I will certainly use these reflections going forward.
The Company
I found this insight to be well structured and there wasn't any lag between different events. However, I would say that It would have been nice to have had more time to network with people from different sectors of the business and with different entry routes into the company. It would also have been nice to have some exposure to the office to get a feel for the working environment.
The atmosphere is the one thing that impressed me the most about this insight programme at BDO. I have never met a group of people more welcoming and helpful during my university recruitment experience so far. I can definitely see myself applying for a grad role their in the future.
For the short time that I was at the firm I think that they did a great job in investing in our personal development. I was able to practice my interview answers and skills. I was also able to develop my communication and confidence when talking to employees and other students.
As this was a one day insight programme, the extent to which we experienced day to day life at the firm was somewhat limited. However, during my short time at BDO, I gained a much better understand of what it would be like to have a full time role by asking staff members lots of questions.
The insight day began and ended on company culture and the values that are held at BDO. This is therefore something that is of great importance to BDO and something they are very proud of. It was very informative regarding what the company offers, including various sports and charity events, and is reflective of their culture.
I found the content to be extremely valuable in helping me to decide if a career in Accountancy is the right fit for me. The content helped me to understand the day-to-day roles of an accountant. Also I was enlightened to the wide array of different career pathways under the umbrella of accounting e.g Risk and Advisory and Tax
Everything Else
I was not paid or reimbursed expenses. Whilst I certainly would not have expected to have been paid, I think it would have been a nice touch if they covered travel expenses.
Yes, there were lots of opportunities. I managed to network with the staff member running the event, my fellow attendees as well as the current graduate and school leaver speakers. However, I was not allowed to network with anyone higher up in the firms ranking. I have made some great contacts who have already given me super advice.
Really enjoyable. I was able to meet many different people both from BDO and people who were hoping to gain a place in one of BDO's graduate programmes.
Yes, I found out about sporting and charity activities that staff can get involved in.
Yes, I would recommend this insight programme at BDO to a friend!
