The Role
In general, I enjoyed my work placement a lot although there were days when I did not enjoy it. The workload varied and I had a large level of responsibilities which put pressure on me. My team in general suffered a large amount of pressure therefore this reflected on me too.
My immediate team valued my opinion and work a lot. In the end I was seen not as an intern but a general employee with the same resposibilities - this was mostly the case within departments I worked closely along side with too. I made some good contributions to the team in the form of project work which has also been valued by the site as a whole.
I was given very little/no support by my manager. We had scheduled biweekly 'catch ups' which never happened as she was too busy and she failed to reschedule. As I was comfortable within the team and seeked guidance from them I almost felt it was forgotten that in fact I was an intern and I maybe needed more support than others.
I always had a constant workload on a daily basis. I had daily tasks as well as project work. I found that these werent consistent, some days I was a lot busier than others. However, if I was low on work there was always a good chance I could help somebody out in the department.
When I first started I was given fairly simple tasks. As I gained rapport within the business I was able to take on more tasks that are important to the department. I was also given the responsibility to come up with my own projects to continuously improve the department and the business as a whole.
The skills I have developed will assist me in every aspect of my later life. I have learnt about the key elementals of a corportation and being able to communicate with my colleagues (some from different cultural backgrounds). I have learnt how to prioritise and manage my workload effectively and this skill will help me in my last year of university.
The Company
General atmosphere was good, we were able to build good working relationships with eachother by constantly interacting with one another. The team spirit was generally good within my team also.
The internship scheme itself was very well set up. We were given a programme with training programmes such as communication skills, problem solving, decision making and presenting skills. There was also a clear development review as these were set up for 4 times within the year to have with your line manager and the intern programme manager.
As well as the core intern training schemes there was a good level of investment for other interns. We were able to participate in all other training programems such as Microsoft sessions (Excel, Powerpoint etc.) as well as team building training and problem solving training.
The future employment prospects for graduates are huge. There is an international graduate leadership programme which involves working in an office abroad, there are also UK graduate roles which can be either rotating roles or one role focused. I will be applying for the international graduate role and I hope by the end of my placement I may already have been offered this.
The Culture
There was only myself and another placement student and we did not spend much time together outside of work.
Fairly cheap - there are plenty of house shares to live in as Doncaster is a densley populated area in immigrants.
The nightlife is good on the weekends - there is no student nightlife but there is plenty bars/clubs and pubs in the town centre to enjoy.
The Wellness team at work put on some social events outside of work such as nightlife and charity events.
