    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I really enjoyed my placement year and have no regrets about choosing to do my placement at Eaton. You can really tailor your tasks within your role to your degree/interests and if there is another department you would like to try and take on work for, Eaton is very flexible when allowing you to discover what roles you would most enjoy when searching for a graduate role.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Coming into the placement, any intern would have the idea in their head that, because of their job title, they are going to be treated like an intern. However, at Eaton, every intern is treated like a normal employee and (almost) every employee, whether a department colleague or manager, treats you and your workload with respect.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Although guidance from a manager can be very comforting for a new intern, it is not a realistic representation of starting a new job. At Eaton, you will be very much so thrown out of your comfort zone. Even though at first this is daunting, on reflection it is the best approach. You have to communicate with the office in order to complete tasks in your role - this gives you great networking and communication skills. However, of course, if you do need support, your manager will be more than happy to help. This is just not a shadowing internship - you are given your own projects and own responsibilities.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work load depends on projects which are occurring in the business at the present moment. Different projects beginning/ending can change your workload. You will be given core tasks within your role and opportunities to try different tasks/projects throughout your year. If you ever find yourself to be bored, do not hesitate to ask your manager for more work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • On your placement, you are not given dull/unimportant tasks, you are given tasks which will make an important impact on the business. There are opportunities to really make your mark and leave a legacy, by bringing your ideas to the table, by implementing new processes and potentially saving the company money by becoming more efficient. You will very quickly realise how much trust is being put into you as an intern - take full advantage of this.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • One of the most important things that you can implement into your studies after working as an intern is the work structure. Keeping the full-time routine will be very helpful going into final year. The intern training session were brilliant! [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] from Phoenix really is a credit to the internship scheme. The presentations skills training was great and can be implemented into further studies/roles.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is a really nice, comfortable and relaxing environment. The office is diverse and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. There are some great characters that really make your placement, as a lot of people agree that the people are one of the best things about undertaking a placement at Eaton.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Eaton internship program is very structured in terms of training (something I know many placement years lack) and it works very well. Interns have their own program manager, This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions, who is brilliant. He conducts varies reviews throughout the year to ensure that you are getting what you want out of your placement year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Eaton invests a lot into young talent and aims to retain this talent. Over the course of the year, we had a lot of training from an external company called Phoenix. These training sessions gave us great skills which we can take forward to use in future roles and at university. There is also online training available, called "Eaton university", where throughout your year, you can continue to grow your knowledge and skills.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As mentioned, Eaton try to retain young talent. However, as Eaton is primarily an engineering company, this does mean that as an engineer, it is easier for you to continue working for Eaton. The graduate leadership scheme however sounds exciting, with opportunities to meet with senior leaders within the business.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Honestly, this entirely depends on the site that you are at and the other interns you are alongside - as with any experience. In my experience, we had 6 interns at our site, and we got on well, would go out for far too many meals/drinks etc... but even if you are the only person your age at your site, people are willing to socialise and you regularly forget the age gaps between employees.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Personally, I coincidentally undertook my placement in the same town as my university. I would say that living costs are average, around £80 a week. You can either live with fellow interns (you will be put in touch beforehand) or with university students if you would like to. Social life is not amazing, but there are enough bars/restaurants to keep you satisfied.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The best night out locally would be at the local university - which you can get into. There are a few clubs/bars locally. For better nightlife, you can visit nearby cities such as Nottingham or Leicester, which are only 30 minutes away. You will never not have anywhere to go out - you just won't have as much choice as London etc.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Again, it depends on the social connections you make. If you want to go out after work, you will be able to find people who would want to with you. There are events throughout the year, such as the Christmas party, which allow you to get involved in activities with the company, which aren't role related.
