The Role
Working at HSBC has been an invaluable experience, the company has given me a lot of opportunities to develop my personal and work skills which has assisted me to meet my objectives and goals quicker and effectively. Not only have I enjoyed developing my skills but also enjoyed learning more about the bank and how it can have a big influence to the economy.
At HSBC there has always been social events. Social events have given me the opportunity to get to know my team better which helped me to build a better bond with my team. The social events have allowed me to become more confident and comfortable to have discussions with different people.
When support and guidance was needed it was given in a very effective way which kept me focus on achieving my objectives, however support and guidance was not given as frequent as I would expect it to be given.
I would always plan my daily schdeule a few weeks before the day. This therefore allow me to create a busy day and therefore it would keep me engaged. While working on some key projects HSBC would always organise some activities that I would join occasionally which kept me eventful.
I was working very closely with the Head of D&I which suggested the large amount of responsibility I was given while working at HSBC. When it came to any projects we would divide the work equally. This made me feel valued and it showed that my team trusted me on my skills.
One of the key skill I have developed during this placement year has to be organisation skills. Organisation skills will be very beneficial for me during my final year. As it will allow me to be more efficient and effective in completing my assignment and objectives and therefore keep me on track for my degree.
The Company
The office has an open office policy, which means that no one has a set desk. Open office has allowed me to network with a number of different people along with that it has allowed me to learn a lot of different concepts and views.
The placement did not have a set programme, however my team did have a lot work load for me to get involved which was a great way to get an insight on how the corporate life works
HSBC had provided a number of events and courses were I was able to develop personally. There are a number of online courses that I did on a monthly basis which helped me to develop my knowledge of the company and the law. Along with online courses HSBC would send us out twice a year for a development day.

HSBC provide a very attractive and competitive graduate scheme. The scheme allows you to explore a good portion of the business, The scheme covers a range different sectors from retail to head office. The scheme provides you with effective training which help you to progress within the company
The Culture
During this year placement there were only 2 people taking part. Having a fellow student working with me made it much more interesting as we were able to discuss more about the business in a comfortable way hence made it easier to learn about the business.
The location of work was in central Birmingham, living within Birmingham central can work out to be very cost effective, as there would be no need to get public transport. In terms of socialising there are variety of places with different cost associated so people with different financial situation can easily spot something that suits them.
There are a number of bar/clubs within Birmingham, so there is a lot to choose from.
HSBC provided a number of different ERGS (Employee resources groups) each of these ERGS had different activities so therefore there were lots of chances to get involves in activities outside of work. A lot of employees at HSBC tend to volunteer at least twice a year just to help out the community.
