The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement it was such a valuable exercise and would highly recommend everyone do so. My placement was really enjoyable as I was able to venture out of my role and experience working with other teams. This was beneficial as it allowed me to expand my knowledge about the company and not stay in the same role. I also got to visit different sites.
Everyone at GSK is so supportive and friendly. From the moment I joined everyone welcomed me into the team. They all helped me settle in and feel like a family. Working with colleagues outside my team were also very friendly and made me feel welcome and I have made some great friends along the way.
My manager was very supportive throughout my placement. He was always available to listen when I had any problems and we ensured to have regular one to one meeting to discuss my progress and development. My entire team were very patient and guided my through the different process and tasjk they carry out.
Each day was different, some days I would have back to back meeting and other days I would have plenty of free time. On a daily basis I would say there was a good balance. This helped me greatly with my time management skills and I was able to attend meetings and also complete my tasks before deadlines.
I play an important role in my team. I maintain the SharePoint site, I run regularly audits on different process and suggests ways of improvement. I have also joined other project teams outside of my role and run events for my department. All these responsibilities impact the day to day running of the organisation and would have been handled by actual employees if placement students were not recruited.
I have gained such valuable skills during my placement both interpersonal and technical. These skills will help me in my future career as well as during my final year at university. I have also received training and gained some foundational qualifications enhancing my employability profile. All the skills learnt will be utilized and development throughout my life.
The Company
I was based in the headquarter and the atmosphere here was always so lively. There was always something going on due to charity events, CEO talks and other similar events. Some days were lively than others and due to the flexibility of working from home Fridays were the least fun!
The work placement was very organised. I had a previous IP student help me settle in and help my set up. There was good communication throughout the placement scheme and any important messages were communicated well in advanced. If there was any issues or things I didn't understand I could always reach out and find my answers.
The company had a separate training budget for staff and this helped me in my development as I was able to gain 2 professional qualifications. There were some courses that the company wouldn't pay for but majority of the time they did. However they did invest in delivering a range of talks and events to help us develop.

Working from home
GSK offer a range of different ways to come back and work for them again. The future prospects are quite high and there are many staff within GSK that have full time role from the IP scheme. Personally I got asked to extend my contract to stay longer and was also recommended to the Graduate programme. There are also direct entry route available.
The Culture
GSK have a separate community for all the placement student across the UK. This scheme is called IP unite where they organise many events for all the IP's to get together. This scheme enabled us to meet IP's across different departments and have an excellent social aspect amongst the company. This was very useful to us as we were able to get help through this network when needed.
I was based in London and lived at home during my placement year so food prices were high due to being in London. However they were reasonable and due to this being a paid placement the cost of living was manageable. However GSK had canteens and restaurants inside their building all which were reasonably priced.
I am not a party person and lived at home during my placement so I am not 100% sure about the nightlife. However we are located very close to London and talking to the other IP's they find it very enjoyable as there was easily accessibility to the London nightlife.
Yes ! there were many activities posted by the IP unite team to get involved in sporting, volunteering and other activities outside of work! There was a netball club, cricket and football club. There was also a lot of opportunity to volunteer in different events. This was with the various charity partnerships with GSK.
