The Role
This year has been transformational for me. I came into IBM at the start of the year not knowing what I wanted to do after graduating and with minimal knowledge of the tech industry. I am leaving with what I consider a decent knowledge of the industry and set on the idea of working within it.
My immediate team was very good at involving interns and giving us business critical work to complete pretty much straight from the start of the year. At other times throughout the year I have felt under-valued as an intern, but very rarely.
The framework put in place by IBM is very good, having two managers is a good idea for supporting the interns throughout the year. At times I have certainly though guidance was lacking but a quick chat with my manager(s) can remedy this.
This has varied greatly throughout the year. Due to the nature of our team (sales) some times of the business year are naturally more busy e.g. month/ quarter/ year end. At some points I have been very light on my feet with workload but there is always something you can find to do.
As mentioned above, I feel I was given tasks that were quite business critical. There is certainly scope to be involved in projects that can make a noticeable difference within the company. The intern community is valued.
Absolutely invaluable. I feel I have learned more this year than the rest of my time at Uni combined.
The Company
My location is extremely quiet, rarely see over 100 people in the office. However my immediate team is usually in the office and create a good atmosphere.
It is well set up, there is a definite framework set up because IBM have been offering internships for years.
I don't feel that the company make a personal investment to each intern but there are policies in place that make it easy for you to perform self-led learning on just about any topic
