The Role
I have had a mixed experience whilst working for Hays. Although the company is a brilliant company to work for, I do not feel that I am cut out for the sales focus of the role and therefore do not see a long-term future for myself either at Hays or in recruitment in general.
Hays has a fantastic work culture where success is celebrated by the wider team. There are lots of incentives to hit targets, including paid nights out and away days. Despite being an intern, I feel as if I am treated as an ordinary member of staff.
I have had two main reviews during my placement year and have also had regular one-to-ones with my managers. Honest feedback allowed me to address what I need to improve on and what I am currently doing well at.
The nature of the contract I am working on means that I have been through stages where I have been extremely busy and I have also been through times where I have been very quiet.
Hays interns are expected to perform the role of an associate recruitment consultant. Targets are very similar to those given to permanent staff and expectations are similar also.
I have learnt a lot about negotiation and have learnt a lot about B2B communication. When employing temporary workers, I have also learnt stuff about employment law which helped me build upon what I learnt in university modules.
The Company
Hays has an excellent atmosphere and there is a real buzz about the offices!
The overall intern programme was very well structured. I knew exactly what I needed to do at all points of the programme.
Training at Hays is excellent. Even as an intern, I still received a week's training at the Hays Academy and also a further week at their training centre in Birmingham.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I do not believe that I am cut-out for recruitment as a long term career and therefore have no intention of returning to Hays post-graduation.
The Culture
Yes, interns and permanent colleagues interact seamlessly and interns are invited to almost all company events except the national sales conference.
Liverpool is an affordable city to live and work. Nights out are reasonable and rents on the outskirts of the city are affordable for students.
Hays office is located amongst bars and restaurants, but nightclubs are about a 20 minute walk into the city centre.
Other than alcohol-related activities, there hasn't been many other extra-curricular activities.
