The Role
My placement year has been really enjoyable, after getting over the initial shock of work life. Both work and social life at hays is great. I feel like I have learnt so much and experience earned at hays will be transferable into other career paths, not just recruitment. The competitive sales environment pushed me to work hard and make money for the company. Only down side is interns don't earn commission, but this did not mean my hard work was overlooked.
Everyone is very encouraging. When you feel like you are falling behind, managers and peers push you to do better and when good results are achieve, even if they are small, they are celebrated. Every 4 weeks there is an opportunity to win intern of the period. Nominations and winners are announced to the whole office which is a real confidence boost.
Senior manager and directors are very open to questions, we all sit in the same areas, no secluded areas for directors.
Relatively busy, work is always non stop, there is always something to do but it is not too much work, as long as I managed my time correctly. This is hard in the first few weeks but once you have a routine of day to day activities the work didn't get on top for me. I very rarely have had to stay in the office longer because I haven't finished work.
A lot of responsibility, although I wasn't managing my own desk I was sharing responsibilities with my manager. When she was on leave I would solely manage a whole contract and permanent desk. Interns are given almost the same responsibilities as associate consultants, sometimes interns do less client interaction but we are still trusted to liaise with big clients if needed.
For my degree I will definitely be able to manage my time better. After having a full time job and also having to do assignments on top of that I have learnt how productive I can be. life skills - learn how to manage my money better. accounting for travel, social, and still saving some as well.
The Company
Really fun, high energy, lots of banter but never distracting from work. Fun at the right times.
No issues at all. From interview to starting at Hays, everything ran smoothly. Once I started, all training sessions were well organised, I was kept informed with plenty of notice of any changes.
A lot of training at the beginning. Module 1 was a three day course at another office, found that really useful, could have done with that a little earlier in my time with hays. had it after a few months but a few weeks would have been better because I learnt so much.
Company Parties/Events
Hays are really open about having Interns back after they finish Uni. They start speaking about it around 3 months before you finish. When coming back after being an intern you have opportunity to be promoted quicker than an associate consultant. You also don't have to come back in the same specialism or team, you can change.
The Culture
You tend to have more socials in your teams rather than as groups of interns but there are incentives for interns including bowling or bounce (table tennis bar)
Very expensive
Central London has everything
They encourage sporting and charity events such as fun runs and tough mudder. A lot of people get involved.
