The Role
At first I didn't enjoy the role as there weren't many people in my team so I wasn't able to be given much support. As the year went on I was given more independent work to do which I thoroughly enjoyed; now I am at the end of the year I can say that I did enjoy it and I will miss it. I enjoyed the role and what it entailed but not necessary the department I was in.
My manager was very supportive and gave me lots of interesting work to do when I had capacity. She always gave me valuable feedback and I felt as though the work I did was valued. There were some members of the team that weren't as accepting as just expected us to know everything straight away but most of them were very nice and understanding. I felt like everything I did was valued and done for a purpose.
At the start of my placement the head count of the team was very small so I wasn't given much guidance as there wasn't the resource available. The manager who was assigned my 'mentor' was always too busy to support me and was constantly working from home making it harder to interact. After the first few months when the team was less busy I was given guidance by another member of the tea who was amazing. My manager has always been supportive and answered any questions I had and if she didn't know would show me where to go to get the answer.
At the start I was always bored and looking for more things to do but due to my lack of knowledge and skills there wasn't much I could do. I was doing more admin and organisational stuff rather than analytics which was what I was supposed to be doing. Once the first 6 months had passed I was given much more work to do and was constantly busy which I enjoyed, I was always asking for more things to do. I never felt as if I was overwhelmed; I was able to balance everything.
I was never given responsibility of a whole project, but any work I was given I was wholly responsible for. I was also given responsibility of any meetings I organised and to update my manger on any progress I made on the work I was given.
I fell I have developed my soft skills immensely such as my confidence in what I am presenting, talking to new people and representing myself. I have also developed my written and verbal communication skills which I know will help me with university work and future interviews. Due to the nature of my job my excel and SAS programming skills have developed which I know are things many company's now look for in a desirable candidate.
The Company
Most of the time the office was very dull. This I think is due to the lack of people, how busy people were and also personalities. I always tried to start conversations with people and later in the year things did liven up.
When I first started the company Pontoon who employed me for Lloyds were very unorganised; they told me my start date 3 days before I started. when I got to Lloyds I didn't have all the computer accesses I needed but this I think is something that couldn't have been helped and is due to the IT procedures and how they work.
At Lloyds there are lots of opportunities to develop and my manager was always willing to give me time to use the resources available to develop myself.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I loved working for Lloyds as I enjoy the culture of the work place and the constant chance to develop. I have applied to the graduate scheme they do hoping to get a chance to work in Commercial Banking: Client Relationships.
The Culture
There were only 2 other placement students in the office I was based and both weren't willing to do anything social after work. I did go for lunches with fellow colleagues when people were leaving etc. which was nice. The office is based on a business park so there isn't much around to help with the social aspect of the business.
We didn't socialise outside of work much and I commuted so would spend more times with friends at home.
There are a few nice bars in Wolverhampton and I was recommended some by my manager.
There were a few things but nothing great.
