The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement with Computacenter, doing a real job for the whole year and the role i have carried out for the year is definitely now a career path that i am very interested to explore. I have met/networked with some really great people and have had great support in my year here.
I have felt a very valued member of staff by my manager and team, and being given the same level as responsibility of work as the project coordinators in the team. My manager has really invested in my personal development whilst in the team, sending me on training courses etc in order to improve my knowledge and carry out my role to a higher standard.
I have been given a high level of support from both my team and my manager with weekly calls/ meetings scheduled with my manager in order to review and plan for the period ahead. I have also had monthly one to ones in order to see where i was hitting the Computacenter values and express any concerns where necessary.
I believe my workload has a good balance with some weeks busier than others but i always had work to complete. There were times in my year where i have been pushed with more stressful work but i think that has only helped me and developed me as a person which i am pleased about.
I was given a proper role and responsibilities in my year with Computacenter, carrying out tasks normally given to established members of the team which has really built my confidence and made me really value my time and effort into pieces of work. I am very glad that i have had this level of responsibility as it has really enhanced my year here.
The Microsoft offices package training i have received here will really benefit me in my final year as for example i will be doing my Dissertation on SharePoint which is one of the courses i have been on. The ITIL and Prince2 Foundation courses will really benefit me after uni as these are potential career paths i am looking at for the future.
The Company
I had a very friendly office atmosphere with everyone willing to help and assist me if i needed it. I was also able to branch out to offices in Milton Keynes and Nottingham in order to have regular face to face meetings with my team and build relationships in those offices too.
The Placement scheme was very well organised with a clear pathway given to me at the start of my year and was clearly followed throughout my time here and i was able to add my input and put my steer on the scheme to aid my personal development at Computacenter.
The company really invested in training and developing me as much as possible and the same that a full time member of staff would have been given.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
I have been looking into the Project Management Graduate Scheme with the company as a potential career path for me in the future and the role i have carried out in the previous year will suit this graduate scheme perfectly. There are also various other graduate schemes for me to look into.
The Culture
I was very lucky to have been put in contact with 4 other placement students working at Computacenter and was able to arrange to get a house with them which has given us a little bit of a 'student lifestyle' after work. There has also been regular socials with all the placement students in order to catch up with one and other and see what everyone has been up too.
The cost of living and socialising was slightly higher than i was used too with the company offices being in Hatfield which is just outside of London, however living and socialising with other placement students meant we were all in the same boat and could work out alternatives to socialise.
The nightlife of Hatfield was not the best however with St Albans only a short drive away which had plenty of pubs and bars for the weekends and being just 20 minutes outside of London was very handy if you wanted to go out for drinks or socials with the other placements.
There were many socials organised after team meetings etc in order to bring the team and placement closer together. I also competed in a charity 5 a side football tournament organised by work which was a great way to have fun but for a good cause.
