The Role
I enjoyed the learning aspect of working at IBM. This includes both the tangible soft and hard skills I will take with me, as well as the soft intangible skills. Overall I would say it has been an enjoyable year. However, I have not had the opportunity to do anything out of the ordinary or fun to to say.
I feel like a valued member of the team. Although I work in a fairly senior team I have always felt as though I was treated fairly and with respect. At times this can lead to being thrown in at the deep end, and not being instructed in a direct fashion.
I have been given little guidance by my manager. That said I have not requested or needed it for the most part. It would be nice to see some more proactivity from my task manager, however overall the lack of direct support has worked to my strengths and allowed me to flourish professionally.
I usually had a good balance between being busy and not having too many tasks, however the nature of my role meant that inevitably there where times when I had heaps of work in very small periods of time. This was a bit stressful, but a great learning experience in of itself.
I was given free reigns with a lot of my projects, and although I was accountable and responsible for the outcomes, I was not man-managed and had a very healthy amount of freedom. Overall it worked very well and allowed me to display my proactivity and desire in a business context.
I expect that the skills learnt at IBM will help me in a general sense at university, if not specifically with some of my courses. More importantly though I do believe that the whole year has improved so many of my skills, and introduced me to a host of new skills too.
