The Role
I enjoyed the project work I was involved in. I think my placement year came at an exciting time for a legal intern (with the new GDPR), as I was able to get involved with making changes to current Volvo processes in order to achieve compliance. This is a lot of responsibility for an intern so I enjoyed this part of the experience the most.
This depended much on the team I was working with as well as the task I was doing. Sometimes I felt extremely valued, where people did not treat me as an intern at all, but occasionally this was spoiled by something that somebody said/did to make me feel completely useless as an intern - but this only happened maybe three times, the rest of the time I felt valued.
I had some days where I was given all the support I needed, and other days (usually when my manager was busy) where I was left to struggle on my own. Whilst this is part of the working life, I think on an internship where it is our first 'real' experience of the working world, more support is needed.
This really varied. Some days, particularly at the start, I had nothing to do. Other days, particularly towards the end, I was so busy. It really depended on what was going on, and how free my manager was to give me tasks to complete. I think at the start I wanted to do more, but when I asked I was given admin based jobs, whereas now I'm trusted more with different tasks.
I feel I have a lot of responsibility now. I am completing a task at the moment which I feel requires my manager to trust in my capabilities, in order to allow me to even attempt it. This I would say is something I enjoy, as I never expected to be given a task that will genuinely make a difference to Volvo when I leave.
I think soft skills like time-management and prioritisation will stay with me at uni and beyond, because they can be incorporated into any path I take. Things also like computer skills and presentation skills that I have developed, are guaranteed to be useful beyond this job at Volvo.
The Company
Quite chilled out - everyone tends to get on with everyone. It is nice to go to the kitchen and have small talk with almost everyone in the office, even if you don't know them so well.
I think the internship was quite poorly organised. Some interns lacked computers/chairs/simple office equipment for the first week and beyond. This creates quite a negative first impression of course. Also parts of the induction weeks were quite badly organised, in terms of their relevance to us as interns.
They allowed us to go on all training as though we were full time staff, which is beneficial to us for uni and beyond. I took part in excel training, time management course and presentation skills course, which all helped to develop my skills, making me more employable in future.

They do not have a grad scheme at the moment, which is obviously a big negative!
The Culture
There was a group whatsapp, where people would plan to meet up. The interns would gather mostly on Friday evenings together, although nothing official.
Did not live/socialise in the area - commuted for about 1.5-2 hours in order to live at home, so cannot comment on this.

There was the occasional golf day, but other than that not much in the way of getting involved outside of work.
