About You
The placement has enhanced my skills and knowledge on different key software packages which I use at university. I feel more confident using the software as colleagues offered me feedback on the work I had done allowing me to understand the task at hand a lot clearer. I really enjoy the event! I do gained a lot of information above online searching at home. And the mock assessment process is pretty much useful, that gave me a clear view of what is the real process look like, and I will more clear that how to prepare.
My colleagues were extremely friendly to me allowing me to settle in very quickly. The staff were easy and to talk to and helped me in terms of getting around the firm, showing me the lunch cafeteria. etc. I promise you will not feel worthless or unappreciated in your time at this amazing firm.
My line manager was always looking for work for me to do in order to get the most out of my placement and regularly check how I was getting on with the tasks set. Some tasks were more challenging than others, however, these were the tasks I relished the most, in order to test my engineering knowledge.
Skills such as software knowledge, team-work, communication skills, improved knowledge on innovative technologies and an overall better knowledge in building services engineering are the main skills I have developed during my placement. These skills will stick by me through my masters and any future jobs I have. I really learnt a lot.
The Company
It started with an induction that took several hours and then I was sent to meet my Leader. It was day for day and everything was happening very fast. The experience was very challenging and rewarding. In terms of structure, due to the nature of work that a director does here, I wasn't always sure that the plan won't change in the last moment but I went with the flow.
The atmosphere was very intense at first as not everyone knew each other but as the day progressed it got much better.
I was given a personal laptop, electronic pass for all offices in London and was over all cared for by the company quite a lot. The programme started with an induction where they made sure everyone understood what was going on and gave us a good idea of what was to come.
I got an insight into the day to day activities of a director and people working on the project but I don't believe that to be indicative of work environment on every level. I had the chance to participate in meetings that meant it improved overall employee conditions and I understand that everyone is cared for and matters for the company.
Everything they say that is important to them on their website, I found to be true and if you are looking for a point of reference, I'd start there. The company culture would attract any employee as everyone loves to work together and help each other. Work here seems fun and not a boring thing you get up to each morning.
Very useful. It has got me thinking a lot and was an incredibly informative day. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of applying to this wonderful firm - graduate recruitment scheme. It really is a must. This has cleared up my future plans for sure, and now I am sure of what to do in business.
Everything Else
There wasn't really anything to be reimbursed for so this question is not really applicable. We were well looked after and the firm even provided lunch and drinks for us which was very thoughtful. I don't think money would be an appropriate incentive for this event as the fact that no money is given filters out the people who are just looking to get paid.
Yes. As mentioned before, 3 of the more recent recruits joined us during the first half of the day and this was great. They gave a valuable insight into the company and what it is like to work there. I got to network with many current employees of the firm too, which was really great.
As this was an event that lasted for just a day this question is not really that relevant I guess, but we were able to meet with the 3 employees that took part in the first half of the day and also the many other participants of the open day.
We were more focused on the graduate recruitment process rather than activities outside of work, but some social activities were mentioned. However, a few casual conversations taught me that employees here are part of many after work societies: where they play- football, badminton, tennis... and a lot more sports, something that took me by surprise.
Absolutely yes! It really is an incredibly useful day if you are thinking of or want to apply for the firm's graduate recruitment scheme. Even if you are currently going through the recruitment process and have applied already it will be incredibly useful for you as you will find out about what to expect at the next stage. Do it!
