About You
I think that the presentations were very informative and had extremely passionate speakers who had a real enthusiasm for the practice area and were happy to answer all questions. Sitting within two practice groups also gave me a lot of insight into some of the tasks a trainee might undertake on a TC in those two departments at SH, as well as the actual work the firm carries out in those areas.
I felt extremely valued by everyone I worked with, being thanked by anyone I completed any work for. Everyone made a real effort to get to know the vacation schemers and give us a real insight into their work and their culture here at the firm. The buddies also looked after me very well, making sure I had enough to do but were also available for questions.
I received a lot of support from both my supervisor and buddy on both weeks, given challenging tasks but enough information that I could tackle them and enough freedom to do so in my own way. The associates who gave me tasks were also very helpful if I had any questions about the work.
Having not yet studied law (GDL or LPC), everyone was very understanding and so gave me extra guidance through tasks, meaning that I was not held back by this and got to learn a lot 'on the job'. Delving into such a technical area (Corporate tax) was challenging as it is very legislation-orientated but I felt that this was a great way to get an understanding of what I would be doing as a trainee, and what I will learn more about on the LPC.
The Company
The two weeks were brilliantly structured and had a good mix of social activities, presentations and practice area work. There was definitely enough opportunity to get stuck in, in all areas.
The atmosphere of the firm is really pleasant and welcoming, with people clearly getting on very well with their colleagues, and inviting vacation schemers into this atmosphere as well. All of the people were lovely and seem as if they would be a pleasure to work with!
The firm definitely worked to ensure we would feel comfortable working in the practice areas for two weeks, giving us IT training and making sure we knew who we could go to for help. It would have been interesting to have had a skills session to get exposure to the training you receive once at the firm.
I believe the vacation scheme was a great insight into the firm and what it would be like to work here as a trainee. I felt fully immersed in the culture and work of the firm.
I did gain a very good understanding of the culture at the firm and how social, supportive, honest and team-orientated it is. It seems as if people enjoy coming to work because of the people they work with and have made life-long friends here.
The content was extremely helpful to help guide me on what seats I would want to undertake on my TC and what area I may want to qualify into. All the areas were presented really well and all did sound very appealing!
Everything Else
I was paid adequately but my travel into central London does cost quite a lot and so it would have been ideal to have been reimbursed for the travel expenses.
There have been many opportunities to network with all level of staff at the firm and to speak to a variety of people.
Very relaxed so that you could ask whatever questions you wanted to about the firm, that person or their practice area. But it was also nice to get to know the people more and their backgrounds to see who the firm hires and what culture they want to have.
Yes, I heard a lot about the different sports and fundraising activities that employees get involved with!
I think that these two weeks have been fantastic and would definitely recommend the placement to be a valuable insight for anyone interested in working in a firm of this size and with its reputation and expertise in its practice areas.
