The Role
A great opportunity to try out something I had no previous experience in. The scheme was well organised, with plenty of events, activities and networking opportunities planned. My team and its work may not be what I am best suited for but I found it a really worthwhile experience and definitely learnt a lot.
In a busy team it can be difficult for people to spend the time explaining things to you (task or market related). My team made an effort to explain and talk through both when possible and ensured I was kept busy. I tried to contribute and join in whenever possible.
Tasks were clearly set and explained. If I needed the help my mentor was happy to help and if she was too busy then this would be delegated to a more experienced graduate or trainee. If I wanted the help they were happy to talk things through and answer any broader questions I had.
As I was in a fairly busy team there was a lot going on and a range of potential projects for me to get involved with. On an occasion where I wasn't busy the project gave me something to work on and 'fill the gaps'. The summer scheme events also gave me plenty of events to attend.
Due to liability issues and a lack of experience it is difficult to be given complete responsibility over tasks. However I was set projects that were my responsibility to get on with and finish within a reasonable time frame. I was responsible for my own time management, calendar and organisation.
I definitely feel that the internship has been a worthwhile experience in terms of university studies. Some of the skills I've learnt will greatly assist me in projects next year and the month has really helped consolidate my academic learning in a practical environment. What I have learnt will allow me to adapt more quickly to graduate life than I would have previously done.
The Company
There is generally a very welcoming atmosphere in the office. I have noticed this does vary from team to team and the tone of that individual team is a big part of the general atmosphere. Overall I would say it is friendly and the majority of people are happy to chat to you about their work and their team.
The placement itself was very well organised. Both the tours were a highlight for me as it was a great chance to learn more about the city. The networking events, activities and departmental talks were very well organised. I believe the scheme was a really good insight into life as a graduate.
As I was only here for a month it would be too hard a task to fully train, however I do feel people took to time to talk through any questions and explain the market or tasks to me. The project was also a great chance to develop research and presentation skills.
Personally I feel that the month has been a really good insight and would be thrilled to gain a graduate position. I've tried to get to grips with the graduate scheme and how it works and I feel the rotation system and quality of education is one of the best.
The Culture
Personally I found my team weren't the most social compared to other teams and past work experience, potentially because they are so busy. However, amongst the interns there is a fairly lively social scene. Several of the same interns made an effort throughout the month while some only made an appearance on occasion.
The cost of living and socialising in London is extortionate, particularly with being a student. In all honestly without somewhere in reasonable proximity to London to stay for free, for some I feel it would be impossible to afford to do an internship without being on a huge budget and forfeiting meals and socialising.
London nightlife is very good. Plenty of different options ranging from "experience bars" such as swingers and a normal bar or club. In London's West End there is definitely a surveyor nightlife in the local area but it more takes the form of post work drinks. Overall very good nightlife.
I would say it depends on the month you are working and whether you actively look out for the opportunities. While I have been here there's been plenty going on from rugby to football to rowing events. I also attended lunch and learns which were really useful. The scheme also organised outside of work activities.
