The Role
Enjoyed the year, there is a lot of on-the-job training and all employees are keen to teach and help out. Interns are given real responsibilites and are depended upon as normal employees. I would recommend a placement with Delphi to any interns looking for a placement or internship for the year.
Colleagues are very happy to help out when needed and you are treated as one of the team rather than a temporary intern. They show appreciation for the work that you do. However, this culture does vary with different departments / teams and is not present throughout the whole company.
Management / Supervisors were happy to give as much support as necessary to help with the role. They are very open and easy to go to with any issues or questions. Managers do give constructive feedback / positive praise when necessary. Good guidance is given when starting out.
The work load did vary with problems facing the plant at the time, there was a good balance. However, there was always work given/ available during quieter times. Open nature of team meant you could ask for more work if needed to keep busy, or for help if you had too much work on to meet deadlines.
Interns are treated as normal employees and you are given as much responsibility as you can prove you are able to handle. You are given work necessary to meet important deadlines or to help solve plant issues. Management look for opportunities for you to take on tasks / skills. You are not given more work than you can handle though.
Management are keen for you to tick off all the skills or training that you would like to trial. My internship lead to several transferrable skills than can be applied to many industries. However, this depends heavily on the placement role, as some jobs are managed better than others in terms of training.
The Company
Operations Office / Plant atmosphere was good, everyone is friendly and enjoys a joke. Again, as there are several teams and areas within Delphi, this atmosphere does vary heavily. Some teams do not seem to have such a friendly atmosphere however, which some interns found to be very tough to work in.
Being the first intern in my department, the transition for a new employee into the team was not seamless however, everyone in the team helped me the best they could to get set up with everything. Everything else was very well organised in terms of student benefits / access to company portals.
The company are willing to provide necessary training for the job role that you are doing, and will help in getting providing training that you require. However, there was little to no investment in terms of personal training exercises to help you develop further than what is necessary for your role.

Future employement benefits vary depending on the team you are placed in. There are several areas within Delphi to work in and it is possible to move to different areas of the company during your career with them. However, progression with employees seems to be slow compared with other organisations.
The Culture
There are several interns /students in the company, however socialising is down to the student alone. There are not any student socials planned by the company, so it is down to the individual to find other students to socialise. However, there is a good social scene amongst the intern students and other young employees.
Cost of rent in the area is not that bad, however there is not a lot of choice for people living alone. There are several options for people happy to rent a room in a shared house. Socialising is not expensive, there are several things to do in the area that is not in any way expensive.
There are several shopping centres aroung the area, with lots of choices for Chain restaurants however there is no good nightlife in the area. Aside from nightlife, there is a lot of things to see in both the county as well as a short drive away from the Delphi site.
While this is dependent on the team that you work in, my team did a few activities after work. However, this is spaced a few times per year. The company does a few activities per year with the whole company, e.g. breakfasts / barbeques during work hours which does help with socialising.
