The Role
I loved the experience because it gives you a great insight into the workings of M&A transactions, IPOs and many other services offered by Citi to clients. Not only do you contribute to offering Citi's services but you also get to know very interesting people in your team and across the investment bank.
I felt that my colleagues were very respectful and valued my work a lot. As I started I found it fairly difficult to get up to speed but as I the days went by I took on the team's speed and I was given more difficult/relevant work along the way.
Everyone in my team was super friendly and always happy to help. You can feel that there is a real sense of belonging in the team and that helping out interns is no problem at all. On the contrary, I felt like colleagues wanted to help to make you one of them.
It is no surprise that I was very busy. Investment banking is a high powered industry but that is partly what I love about it. The hours are long but I often found myself staying late because I wanted to deliver good work to my manager instead of being overloaded with tasks. That way it was rather my own quality standard that made me stay than a colleagues work load.
I was given a lot of responsibility in my team because we had several head count changes during my internship. This meant that everyone had to step up including me. I liked this development because it made me feel like I was actually part of the team instead of just an intern that is coming and leaving after summer.
The skills and most importantly the attitude towards colleagues, clients and work I learnt during my internship are invaluable to any aspect of life. Fundamentally, they can be summarized as deliver good work, on time and be nice. Being humble and contributing to delivering excellent results is a skill that can be useful in further studies as well as in a career at Citi.
The Company
The atmosphere was great! Everyone is friendly and there is a healthy balance between delivering good results and being human. I found that everybody was professional as well as casual at time which made it feel less tense. The atmosphere makes you take ownership of your work and do it to please your own standards rather than your managers.
The internship was well set up. As one would expect, in the first weeks, the team is given additional work force that they do not know the capabilities of yet and they are naturally calibrated to deliver good results with the normal team setup. That means that you have to let the team adjust to your presence, which I found was the best way to organise the internship.
We were given standard training in the first week. This was necessary because there was wide range of backgrounds across the summer analyst class. Some had done several internships before and others had never used Excel. I found that the training week was a good way to get us up to speed and make a cohesive group out of the summer analyst class.
Financial Bonus
I would like to carry on working at Citi and I feel a very strong sense of purpose, satisfaction and pride being a member of my team. I like the work environment very much as everything is setup to maximize your productivity. One can sense that the processes are running well and that it everything is laid out well for a happy future at Citi.
The Culture
Yes! Everyone was incredibly friendly and diverse. I enjoyed meeting colleagues from incredible backgrounds, some I had never thought I would ever meet. The social scene and diversity amongst the colleagues was one of the things that I was especially surprised by and excited about. Citi is a truly global firm as can be seen in its analyst class.
It was fairly expensive but the pay during the internship takes that into account and many things like late night cabs and dinner were covered by Citi. This made working here very enjoyable and not much more expensive that my life during my studies. At times, I felt like it was actually easier if not cheaper to live during my internship.
London nightlife is great because it caters for everyone, the nightlife scene is very big and well established so any music or activity can be found at any time during the week. There are great pubs around the office were the city meets for drinks and one can always go towards the city center for some more nightlife.
My team got on very well, therefore we went to play 5-by-5 football and organised meet ups after work. Naturally, colleagues bond as they are going through the same work load/process and so it is easy to coordinate outside activities with team colleagues. I enjoyed meeting my colleagues after work as it made the work environment more personal.
