The Role
The internship allows to meet people from different divisions, work on a variety of projects and develop your communication, problem-solving and time management skills. You will be required to do different tasks with deadlines or without. Do not forget to be proactive! Even if the project is open-ended, try to bring something new, always catch up with your manager and ask for feedback.
I feel very valued. People want to know my opinion, and they are interested in my point of view.
All projects are kindly explained by management. If you do not understand something, everybody is happy to answer your questions. However, be careful not to ask your manager too many 'not that important' questions. You will have a buddy who can help you and give you advice. If you can Google something, then do it!
You feel very busy but the projects are very interesting, and therefore the time flies really fast. You are responsible for the projects you work on and your manager will be looking at how good your time-management is. It is not a school anymore, you cannot relax and wait to be told what to do. Being busy is the best thing you can have during the internship! It makes you feel that you are worth something!
You are given responsibility from the Day 1. Also, you are involved in real projects that may impact the entire division or even the whole company.
The skills and training help you a lot in your degree studies and beyond. This experience can help you to be more confident and communicative. Also, you will have plenty of work in Excel, so hard skills will be developed as well. In addition, you will be asked to make a presentation, and this will develop your PPT and communication skills.
The Company
People in my office were very supportive and helpful. They always asked me if I need something and if I understand everything. If I did not, we arranged meetings and discussed everything together. The general atmosphere is very friendly! Do not be afraid of asking people to grab a coffee - they will definitely like your idea!
The overall work placement was well organised! You have different events, trainings, skills sessions and overviews of what your department work on and what products/services it offers. It is never boring and you always know where to go/what to do/who to speak to. Overall, it is important to remember that if you feel that you have nothing to do, then ask for more work!
During your first week at Citi you will have different kinds of training aimed to develop both of your hard and soft skills. The training is very interesting, and it also helps you to get to know other interns as some of the tasks will involve group work. Citi is great for investing in its employees, trust me!
If you do great during your summer internship, then you may be offered a graduate offer. Also, if you do not want to work in your division, you can speak to HR and ask to help you get a position in a division of your interest. If they see that you perform well, then you may get an opportunity to work in the place you like.
The Culture
Even though it is said that summer internship is a 10-weeks long interview, it is not a competition among interns. You will also be assigned some team projects, and therefore you will need to have same goals and act as a team. Your colleagues will be helpful and supportive. Do not forget to interact with others as much as you can!
Canary Wharf is not the cheapest place. However, if you want to save some money, you may have lunches in a canteen. Otherwise, there is always a variety of restaurants and cafes in the area for every taste. Accommodation in Canary Wharf is quite expensive however you can always share your flat with other people (e.g. interns) to save some money.
Honestly, I did not have time to enjoy the Nightlife in the area I worked in. You will be busy all the time and it will be hard to go out too often. However, if you still have some time, then you can be sure that the nightlife in Canary Wharf is great!
Firstly, your colleagues may ask you (or you may ask them) to get a lunch together, walk or even meet during the weekend. Secondly, there will be a 'Community Day' during which you will be involved in some volunteering activities. Thirdly, there will be different events organized throughout your internship. Enjoy!
