The Role
I did and do enjoy my internship, as Rolls Royce provides a nice and friendly atmosphere to work in. Additionally, it is nice to work with a vehicle like Rolls Royce everyday and contribute to the end product in a certain way. Other than that, the plant in general spreads out a nice atmosphere and a good work feeling.
Of course, it is diffcult to generalize every colleague. There are some colleagues, who you feel like friends with, but there are also colleagues, who think they know everything better than "the little intern". I have had a good harmony with my direct colleagues and managers though, where I cannot complain about anything.
The support of my managers and colleagues was good at any time. I have been able to ask them any questions I had at any time. At the same time, they let you work on your own and let you make your own experiences, being happy to help you with anything you need at anytime.
My daily work always depends of the current projects/work I have going on at a specific week during the internship. In the beginning, I sometimes felt quite bored, so I had to get some work by myself. There were also times afterwards, I felt really busy, so in general I cannot complain about this point.
I was given lots of responsibilities within my own projects. As already mentioned, the managers gave me a project and let me work with it, as far as I could/wanted. Even though, they were always happy to answer any questions I had and help me with anything I needed during that time.
As it was my first "longer" internship in a company and as it was my first internship in a company with more than 1000 employees, I can definitely take some experiences for my future life. I would say, I have developed more skills for life than for my degree particularly.
The Company
The atmosphere can be described as quite good within my department. There is often time for a joke, which makes work life so much more interesting. Within my whole office, which we share with many other departments, noise would probably an attribute to mention. Anyhow, I cannot describe the atmosphere as negative at all.
In the beginning, the internship set up seemed very unorganized. The contract just arrived a few days before the start of my internship and the email, which you are supposed to get 2 weks prior to your start date, has just arrived one evening before I started, even though you should complete the health and safety date before you start to work.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the group of interns working for Rolls Royce. Even though, the interns were more or less split into 2 groups (english and international), there were enough interns in the international group in order to always have someone being able to do something with.
The cost of living are not very pleasing for a student, especially rent is extremely expensive. Anyhow, not only rent, but also food, drinks, going out, anything is pretty expensive. Socialising is easy within the interns group and easy within young people who work for Rolls Royce or who at least have worked for Rolls Royce.
The Nightlife is improvable. Chichester cannot provide any proper clubs rather than one "Pub & Accomodation", which is used as a club during the weekend. Anyhow, cities like Brighton or London are not far away, so whenever a party is needed or required, there are opportunities to enjoy a good night out not too far away from Chichester.
There are many opportunities to get involved in, as soon as you create these opportunities by yourself. The intern group has organized lots of trips to other parts of the UK by itself. We went to pretty much all parts of the UK and enjoyed lots of fun things together.
