The Role
I really enjoyed my internship as it helped me find out more about what the two roles I was in for my rotations. What a trader and a quant do and what the atmosphere on the floors is I was given different projects through both rotations, some of the projects were completed quicker than others, and some of them were really challenging.
Everybody I have met at Citi is really friendly. They are all willing to help as they understand you are an intern and might not know everything required to complete your projects. All of them will make time to help you. The other great thing is that they treat you as if you were already part of the team, as an equal, which makes you fell like you fit in really well.
The supervisors again are all really nice. They are very willing to help, and will take the time to tackle a problem with you if you are struggling. They will not do it for you, but they will definitely guide you in the right direction. Even when it comes to assignments which have nothing to do with the project they have asked you to complete.
It really depends on the day and how quickly the work you are assigned gets done. I was very busy to begin with, then it died down a bit as I had finished the first projects that I was assigned. Once I got my second project I was busier than before. It really varies.
The responsibility I was given was much higher than I expected. When people say that you will be going to get coffee for them, at Citi that is a lie! The people here want you to work with them as if you were part of the team already. They will give you tasks to do which will actually help them, essentially tasks that they would have been doing otherwise.
I would say the skills I have developed have definitely helped me throughout my internship, and will definitely continue to help me in my next endeavours. These include communication skills as you had to speak to people much more important than you, analytical skills used to solve the problems you were assigned.
The Company
The firm does invest in you from day one. All of the first week they spend it training you via team activities conducted off site, but also via classroom training. They go through the basics that one should know when starting the internship. Before the start of the internship, they also provide you with lessons which should be covered before commencing here. The training they provide is the same as the initial training full time grads go through.
The future employment prospects are very appealing. During the internships there are a total of two rotations, during the full time there is a total of four rotations. After, you can choose which rotation to turn into your job. The conversion rate is rumoured to be high, and they say all the time that if they like you they will hire you. It is not a competition between the interns. It is a chance for them to see if they like you, and a change for you to see if you like them.
The Culture
Absolutely. The cohort of interns was amazing. Citi does spend a lot of time to make sure that the people that are on the internship deserve to be here but are also sociable. They do really like people that can socialise, both in a work environment but also outside of work. You really end up becoming friends with the other interns.
The cost of living of course depends on where you live and where you go to socialise. Drinks will easily be £10 per drink on average in a club, drinks in a pub I think are the usual prices. With regards to living, rent usually ranges from £250-500 per week. Again, it depends.
Everyone that works in Canary Wharf will know that it is very likely to go out with colleagues. Usually it will be a bar or a pub on the river, otherwise it is common to travel to nearby areas of London where there is a more active nightlife, most likely after the pub.
