The Role
The work was very enjoyable mainly because of the people at Citi. Citi really does have some of the nicest people in banking, everyone was very helpful. Some of the tasks were more challenging than others but overall the internship gave ne an insight into what would working at Citi full time look like.
Generally I feel like my work was valued. People wanted me to perform well and helped whenever anything was unclear. I think the full-time employees we quite happy with having intern to help them out on deals etc. The atmosphere at the office was relatively relaxed and you could be more informal with the juniors.
Everyone was very supportive. HR provided all interns with scheduled time every week during which any concerns could be raised. I was assigned with a buddy on another team to ease my transition into the bank, as well as a mentor within my own team. Everyone was available for a chat, you just had to arrange it ahead of time.
The schedule changed on a daily basis, depending on what you were working on you could have had a busy or a more 'relaxed'. I usually worked from 9am till 11pm or 12am. Of course there were longer nights but you were always at the office with other people so it wasn't too bad.
There were a couple of other interns on my team so responsibilities were pretty much split between us. Everything I did was supervised and someone else would always check my work because citi values its reputation and mistakes of interns don't reach clients. The seniors were quite open to any ideas from interns and if you performed well you received more responsibilities.
As someone who wants to go full time into investment banking, I found the skills I acquired to be transferable. I will definitely continue using them in a full time role. The training was good and I think it provides you with a basic understanding of issues that will be further addressed in the training for full time positions.
The Company
The atmosphere was quite nice. The juniors were very helpful and you could easily ask anyone out for a coffee if you wanted to chat about their experiences. Some of the seniors took time to meet the interns, others didn't. It very much depended on their availability. Interns were constantly encouraged to reach out to other employees.
Everything during the internship was well organized. There were events during the internship with interesting speakers. Training week had a couple of social events. Citi could have provided more support prior to the start of the internship as international interns didn't really receive any information about which banks are recommended for opening an account for the summer or how to find a place to live in London, I wish they had an agency that would help with that.
We had a week of training before we started working on our desks. The training was pretty good, it had some corporate finance as well as working at Citi aspects to it. I probably learned the most on the job. They clearly want well trained employees and the training reflects that.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
Other interns were very nice. The atmosphere was rather supportive and there wasn't competition between us. We sometimes went out together or met up for drinks but everyone usually did their own thing in their free time. We got along well and I wouldn't mind working with them full time.
There wasn't really much time to pursue any activities outside of work. we had Saturdays off which was really nice and you could use that time to do whatever you felt like. If you work full time you also have the option of joining Citi organizations to collaborate with other employees.
