The Role
I enjoyed my work placement very much. I was given continued support and guidance throughout the year and the opportunity to test myself with exciting projects which I am proud to be a part of and successfully complete which has helped me realise my full potential. The ability to network with people outside of my business area was a great aspect of the work placement too.
I felt very valued by my colleagues! They always ensured that I was given every opportunity to develop and were always happy to offer help and support. Many of my colleagues have now become great friends and take interest in what you enjoy and are passionate about. They also value to work you put into projects and see you as a benefit to the team.
I was given fantastic support and guidance from my manager. I regularly received feedback on projects I had completed to see what I did well and where I can improve. This was very valuable as it helped build my confidence in my role and ensure I was on track to deliver what was expected of me. My manager was also always on hand to offer help or answer and any questions I had.
For the majority of my placement I felt I had just the right amount of work to get on with which was great because I felt very productive and was learning at the same time. There were periods where I thought I had a lot on but this was not too much of a problem as I had my team to help take some of the smaller tasks that needed doing so I could prioritise the main tasks which needed to be complete.
I was given a lot of responsibility in my role some of these tasks included leading an entire recruitment process for the recruitment of 70 Industrial Placement students across the business, project managing developments events, organising travel for people in the business based all around the world and being responsible for all payments to 3rd party providers.
The skills I have learnt here are skills for life. I feel so much more confident being in a working environment and I also have a greater understanding of how to manage, control and successfully execute tasks given to me within a given time which is a vital skill to learn for my final year at university as well as in my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere was good everyone is very friendly and happy to help. We have a hot desking system in the office which means you are able to sit anywhere you want which is great as it allows you to network with different people everyday and gain an understanding of what they are working on.
The placement is well organised you get a 2 week handover with the previous industrial placement student in the role. This is very useful as you see first hand what you will be doing before you officially start and gives you and opportunity to ask any questions. The placement has a timeline of what projects you will be involved with each month and this can be tailored to include anything else you are interested in getting involved with.
A lot of investment goes into personal training and development as I feel the company really wants to see their industrial placement students develop and grow. My manager sat with me and asked me where I would want to develop and where she would like to see development. An example of where I wanted to develop was presenting in front of people and now I have done countless presentations and feel confident doing so.
Flexi Time
Working from home
Quite appealing there are graduate opportunities available which you can become recommended for by your manager and as a result skip parts of the recruitment process making it slightly easier. You are also well informed about direct entry roles and the benefits they come with. A real benefit is that you get to speak people who have experienced direct entry and the graduates scheme and hear their thoughts.
The Culture
Social scene is good there is Christmas parties, boat parties and many other social events. Placement students and colleagues tend to go for casual drinks after work and its a great way getting to know the people around you. There are also activities available which gives you the opportunity to socialise with other placement students and colleagues.
I live in London therefore I was living at home and the cost of living was very cheap for me. I would pay for travel to and from work on average it would cost me £50 a month on the underground which overall was fairly cheap considering I was not paying for rent.
Did not really experience on placement but I have experienced nightlife in London many times and I would highly recommend although some places can be very expensive.
Yes there were a few colleagues would notify me via email or promote around the business. You can also find out about activities outside of work simply by talking to people.
