The Role
The Summer Internship has been nothing short of a riveting experience. Members of staff are genuinely kind and always willing to help if they can. If they can't I noticed they always put you in contact with someone who can help you in that area. A number of interesting talks and activities are put on throughout the internship too, giving interns the opportunity to broad their experiences.
I feel extremely valued by my colleagues, though they treat you like an intern and so don't expect you to know businesses in depth they still relate with you like the adult that you are. Giving you responsibility on very real, live tasks that are truly making an effect on the world we live in.
The management at Citi is absolutely divine, they're extremely nice always willing to lead and guide you without making you feel overwhelmed and without being condescending. Furthermore supervisors always ensure that you're being taken care of, they're not just there to give you tasks to do they care about your cognitive and social development too.
It depends on the desk you're working on, some desks are naturally busier than others due to the nature of their product. Other teams might not be the bog standard desks you might have heard of and so may operate in an entirely different way. For the most part though everyone is busy, no one's got little to do.
I was given a lot of responsibility to work on very real tasks that the teams were actually working on. It's always lovely to be asked for your view on a current project that they're working on because you know they genuinely want to know what you think. Though due to lack of certifications you may not be able to do the very same thing the employees are doing, you're definitely still responsible for the value adding tasks they give you.
It gave me a renewed sense of discipline and showed me that self discipline is key to excelling not just in Banking but in life. Especially because you might not necessarily be assigned loads of work and so are free to come up with your own. This definitely helped at university as I was able to be more proactive more often and seize opportunities to add value to my work.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was extremely friendly and vibrant. Especially if you're interning at a really interesting time, this time of year the World Cup is always a topic of discussion. Everyone's usually always talking but again it depends on precisely where you are situated within the firm.
The internship was so well organised everything flowed seamlessly. The training program was extremely well thought out, constantly reflecting the values of the firm in an enjoyable and informative way. We were constantly given several opportunities to network within ourselves and amongst senior members of the firm, which is always lovely.
Citi invest their all in personal development there were umpteen opportunities to attend speaker series talks from senior members of the firm on finance and non finance related topics. Topics so far have included tech at work, adolescence mental health, being a parent in finance etc. You're constantly given the opportunity to learn and develop.

Future employment prospects are extremely bright, you can ensure your career will have endless possibilities if you're starting out at Citi. It's a well respected industry leading firm and both industry and non industry players are aware of this. It's clear to see when you see the calibre of those both at the top and the very young talent.
The Culture
The social scene was fantastic, loads of events were put on by HR and by ourselves as an opportunity to get to know each other more. As a result then if you ever needed something from another part of the bank or a piece of information that isn't within your reach you now had a wide network to tap into.
The cost of living in Canary Wharf is extremely high as expected because of its various benefits. Which is why interns usually commute from further out, Greenwich, Stratford, Crossharbour, East India, Pontoon Dock are some of the places that constantly come up in conversations about living areas. Many social companies usually have special deals on food and drinks so it's not too bad.
The Nightlife is great, very accessible given the underground and DLR stations in canary wharf. There are places within walking distance of all firms that provide an extremely enjoyable experience. They also vary in purpose and music genre so that's also quite helpful. Because there are so many other interns at close banks you're bound to bump into one.
There were several opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, some were set up by HR some were set up by the interns themselves. Activities included go karting, rock climbing, nights out, picnics, swimming sessions and so on and so forth. You're allowed to create these kind of opportunities yourself.
