The Role
This work placement was extremely insightful but also enjoyable, it presented to me a good work/ life balance as Savills hosts many social opportunities which then reflects on the office and makes it more of an enjoyable working atmosphere.
I came into this having very little knowledge in my field, my colleagues were patient and informative allowing me to learn and feel valued among my peers
The support was very reassuring and patient, I never felt a burden which can happen when being an intern.
I was given a steady flow of work, but my peers were mindful and didn't overbear me with work. They also didn't give me basic admin jobs which I feel can happen on placement, I was given work that mattered within the department, making a contribution that helped.
I was given the right amount od responsibility, not too little but not a lot. Enough for me to have room to grow, I was included in important meetings with clients and respected as an equal to some of the highest people in my department in those environment which I think is different to a lot of places and makes you feel more involved day to day.
My degree doesn't teach me the skills that my placement requires therefore I was thrown in the deep end, starting from scratch. However, with the patience that my peers gave me I was able to learn and attain valuable vocational skills that I can transfer with my later working life.
The Company
Because of the mixture of departments it is a lively office. The social events that Savills organise creates a friendly and positive atmosphere. The employees get on with each other well and their is diversity in age and experience, which helps.
Very well organised, we were given specific tasks that we had to take part in. We also had online lesson laced throughout our weeks here which gave us a wide breadth of knowledge on all departments. One assignment which really helped was the small focused interviews with a graduate in each department, it was a more friendly and relatable way to learn about their department ad the graduate experience in Savills.
I was invited to a lot of networking events that helped me understand the world of property and socialise with different players, departments and companies. However we didn't get given training on networking, that come later with the graduate programme.
Company Parties/Events
Life at Savills is extremely appealing to me, everyone is friendly and the office is a positive place to work. I enjoyed the tasks given to me and look forward to working towards a career path in this venture.
The Culture
Every week, there was at least one social event to attend. However, this was not always with fellow students. There was only one fellow summer scheme student here at the time and we were in different department, however we still went on site visits together and did the interviews together. In Savills, there are a lot of young employees so even if I didn't go to an event with the other student there were still people my age to engage and network with making it easier and less intimidating.
It is expensive, but a lot of the socialising and network events were on expenses. I live in Bristol, therefore my accommodation and living expenses were free anyway, however if you were visiting and interning it is an expensive city to live in.
Nightlife in Bristol is very and good vary varied. It allows for corporate socialising events in nice bars and restaurants. One event we went to was in the M-shed which is a museums but the space itself was lovely as it looked over all of the harbour side. Growing up in Bristol, I have enjoyed the nightlife in a different sense- therefore there is a lot of variety.
Yes, the networking and research events were every week and there was also a curry club event that happened whilst I was here which was socialising within the office.
