The Role
I really enjoyed the placement; it confirmed that Accountancy is the career I want to go into once I graduate. This will now be a realisation, as I have accepted a graduate position with Grant Thornton beginning in 2012.
I felt really valued, as I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my internship and whilst our on audits I socialised with colleagues in the evening and really felt part of the team.
I was always offered guidance, when unsure of what to do in situations. I did not feel embarrassed asking for explanations either..
I always had things to be getting on with throughout the day and was given a variety of tasks to be done; this enabled me to manage my own time effectively.
I was given a lot of responsibility, this included going and speaking to clients on an audit and requesting evidence from the client to.
I was able to put practice to the theory which I had already learnt from my degree in Accounting and Finance and the skills I have taken from the internship will no doubt benefit me throughout my final year at University. In particular, the Presentational Skills Training days at the Grant Thornton national Learning centre, will help me when undertaking presentations as part of my degree.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere in the office and I felt confident in approaching clients, however there was not a constant buzz of noise around the office, as people had work to get on with too.
The placement was really organised; the first three days were specifically planned out with training and skills sessions with specialised employees and then the following weeks were spent on audits at client sites.
The firm invested heavily in me during my four weeks. I undertook a Presentation Skills Course in the Grant Thornton National Training Centre in High Wycombe. This involved an external company to work with all the interns for 2 days and look to train us on how to deliver strong presentations.
Sports and Social Club
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
I have secured a graduate job with the firm, commencing in August 2012.
The Culture
There was a lot of organised events with fellow interns from across the UK; summer BBQ, London Corporate Responsibility day at a community centre and a 2 day Presentation Skills programme at Bradenham Manor.
I was able to live in my University accommodation, so there was no additional cost to me.
Birmingham is a great city to go out in and I already knew the city well, as this is where I am at university.
Lots of opportunites and other colleagues were really inviting for me to "get involved".
