The Role
The Placement has been better than I imagined it to be. I was given a wide variety of work relating to my degree, from fluid in pipes to new areas such as corrosion. I have had an opportunity to visit and have a indepth Nuclear Powerplant sites which was brilliant.
Every member of my department has been friendly and approachable. They are easy to get along with and if and when I need help they are willing to sometimes go out of their way to help me. They are inclined to introduce me to people in other departments who are more than cooperative.
The support and guidance I have been given by my supervisors have been invaluable. They were always willing to provide support when I need it. They have always been able to guide me to the righ people and documents. The support has not been overbearing it was the right amount to allow me to grow and be indepedent.
It was the perfect balance, I was given enough to do by a month to month basis, this was due to the monthly commitment logs I had with my supervisor ensured I had the right amount of work per week. I was never overloaded with work, if I felt I could do more work then I would approach my supervisor or members of the team to ask if there is anything else I could do.
I was given several projects in which I was the driving force behind, there were also other opportunities available, such as being Co-Lead for the Young Professional Network for my site. The responisbility allowed me to grow as a person. One of my many responsibilities I have had to do organise weekly meeting to ensure that all the relevant stakeholders were statisfied with my progress and allowed me to get their input.
I have received plenty of training which has allowed me to conform to the company's culture quickly. I have improved my organisational skills by way of organising teleconferences as well as events for the Young Professional Network. I have also improved on my confidence, feeling comfortable being with presenting my projects in front of my managers and collegues
The Company
The general atmosphere of the office was peaceful allowing work to be carried out in a pleasant ambience. It was a comfortable environment that allowed for conversations to be carried out.
The placement had a unfavourable start as I was not on the computer systems for about 3 weeks, in that time I was also not able to start work properly until I had access. Once I did however, the placement was organised smoothly, I had a hiearchy I could report to if I was in need of anything.
Personal training wise there is a wide range available in the internal computer system, it is moreso a system of the mroe effort one puts into it the more they gain from the system. The company has invested a good amount in ensuring I was up to company standards.
Working from home
The future employment prospects with the organisation is appealing and I can see myself returning to the company after I finish my degree.
The Culture
Yes there is. There is a good number of placements and Apperentices onsite that are very socialable and approachable. This makes it easier to socialise after work and during the weekend.
The area compared to my unviersity living costs is less but it did come with several issues such as a troublesome landlord. The area is okay for socialising but there are clearly some rough areas that should be avoided after certain times.
The Nightlife is non-existant in my opinion. The places availble are expensive and not as student-friendly as one would like. Although, this might change in the future, there isn't a lot to do apart from the local pub here and there.
Yes, there is. My housemates and I have been able to go on many activities such as bouldering, visiting Bristol Zoo to give an example.
