The Role
I loved it! I felt supported throughout and what's even more important I worked with some amazing people that I instantly connected with and can now call friends. There was so much for me to see, learn and do that I feel like I wouldn't be the same person I am now without it.
I did a lot! I helped around and was never asked to do more than I could. After a while I loved the place so much that I did odd jobs here and there just to be helpful. They all appreciated it a lot and even gave me some chocolates and a thank you card for my work!
I had an assigned clinical coach. She was great and taught me all that she could. I appreciate that she was very busy and could not focus all her time on me. I would love to have learned more, but for what the time allowed I feel like I was well looked after.
It really depended. I was never asked to do more than I could and my lunch break was a full hour so loads of time to rest! I never felt exhausted but also never felt bored so I guess that's what you really want! They definitely never over-used my time there.
I didn't have much. My role was following, watching, and learning. Most of it was not hands on and I wasn't allowed on reception which was understandable but disappointing. By the end I was taught how to do a bit more and as they got to know me I earned their trust enough to be left alone with some tasks.
It made all the difference. I would highly recommend a work placement to anyone; old, young, qualified, or clueless. It brings so much insight and gives you this huge peace of mind that you have time to learn and are not rushed. I am still working in my field and cannot imagine life without it. And it all started at my placement.
The Company
I entered a very tight knit team that would go out all the time and enjoyed each others company a lot. I thought it will be hard to fit in but they treated me well, and with time like a family! I love that it was an equal environment and different positions did not affect the friendship and respect.
I loved it but it was a bit all over the place. I was there to learn and observe but I did not have any clear plan for what I should learn and what I should do. I could dip my fingers in many things but it would be lovely to learn few things back to back too.
They invested some of their time but I never got anything besides that. The company was not very interested in me but the staff helped me a lot on their own initiative. It would help me a lot to get some support from the higher ups and get a review of my work and skills.
I took employment with a different company as they did not have any places for me. I applied again some time after and got offered a place but it would require travel I was not able to do. They have a bad reputation as an employer so I was not entirely convinced about the application I made.
The Culture
There was only one other person and he was in only a few days a week. We worked well together and were treated equally which I was happy about because he started a year earlier than me. Any more students would not have a chance to learn much as the place was small and the staff was not plentiful.
I rent my own house and was able to take a bus to the placement. I was disappointed that I worked for free and did not get offered a bus pass or some sort of reimbursement. The area was ok. There was a small shop and a Morrison 10min away so if in need I could go.
I lived at my own home and I do not like nightlife activities. As I live in Liverpool, the nightlife there is amazing and really vibrant. If I enjoyed it, I would really appreciate the city. I believe all can find something for themselves. I just prefer a nice restaurant and a film.
There were no activities I am aware of that were available to me. I am not sure what activities that could be but I would definitely be interested in attending something like that. Especially if it meant socialising with the staff at my placement or meeting some like minded people.
