The Role
It's a great place to work. Many resources are at your disposal, fast paced and learning is encouraged a lot.
My colleagues were highly educated, most with doctorates. This means that my status in the company has been that of a student. Although I have generated data which is considered by my team, I don't feel as if my work is as important as most of my "colleagues". This is fairly typical for the field of work (R&D) though, I would say.
My team was under a large amount of pressure throughout my placement. Initially, I was given lots of support and guidance by my supervisor. However, towards the end of the placement sometimes there was less time for direct support. However, a good amount of support was still provided by other members of my team where required and my supervisor remained in contact.
Yes. Very busy.
An increasing amount throughout the year, as I became more competent in the skills I needed to work safely.
Immeasurably, I will be far better equipped to study in my final year at Uni and begin any kind of graduate job I choose.
The Company
In and outside of the lab everyone is very friendly and as a placement student I can chat with people outside of science on an equal level. That being said, there is a good work ethic which allows you to get your head down when you need to.
Very well organised. Training up to Christmas and then set deadlines for completion of project etc. You have time frames to work to, set by your supervisor, most of the time.
In the lab, to a great extent. No experiment is too expensive or challenging for you to give a go, provided you have planned it out and discussed with your supervisor. There were opportunities outside of the lab also such as career sessions, CV sessions, scientific seminars. All enriched the experience to a great deal.

After completing a PhD, I would look for work back at GSK within R&D. I may look for other roles in GSK as a graduate. However, it is unlikely for me to be offered a permanent position here.
The Culture
Excellent social environment with other placement students (approx. 80) on site.
Cheap place to live and socialise (in comparison to Ldn).
There isn't much in the way of nightlife
Yes, the placement student society put on events such as the Tough Mudda. Many colleagues meet for socials in the pub on a monthly basis.
