About You
Really enjoyed the internship. First week down in London was filled with lots of talks from senior partners and even the CEO of the firm, alongside many social activities. The second and third week were located in two different practice groups at the firm, which provided opportunity to get involved in real work done by the firm. Would highly recommend the placement!
I felt very valued at DLA Piper. Daily insight sessions from senior partners/global heads of practice areas at the firm made us feel like DLA Piper had a genuine interest in our success, and working on work that a typical trainee would be involved in was very insightful.
The graduate recruitment team were always on hand if there were any issues you needed resolving. Equally, performance reviews for each week were conducted, meaning that there was genuine 1-to-1 engagement with your line manager in both of the practice groups.
As I have already completed my degree but have not yet started the LPC, I cannot answer this question. However, I believe the DLA Piper has given me lots of skills of the practicalities of working in a legal environment, as well as insightful knowledge of the inner workings of a global law firm.
The Company
The insight was structured incredibly. The first week of the scheme saw all interns head down to London for a week of talks and skills session, and the second and third weeks saw interns return to their regional offices and sit in 2 different practice groups.
Genuinely have no complaints! Every single member of staff, from the Graduate Recruitment Team, to every Partner, Associate, NQ and Trainee, to every member of the catering team, the cleaners (etc, etc...) - were all incredibly friendly and beyond welcoming - made the experience more amazing than I could've hoped for!
The firm put on skills sessions (focused on presentation, group work etc.). There were equally daily insight sessions where senior members of each practice group gave thorough and interesting insights into their practice groups. Finally, the work received by each group in the final 2 weeks was not pointless work, but rather gave us a real taste of what the work as a trainee would be like!
The insight was very useful in understanding what a future career at DLA Piper would involve. From gaining knowledge of each practice area to finding out the inner workings of an office, it was all very insightful!
The first week in London gave us a real feel for the core values of the firm as a Global brand. The second and third week really helped get a feel for the office culture in which we would potentially be working.
As someone who was not dead set on a career in a commercial law firm, DLA Piper gave me a great experience of establishing what it is actually like working in a global law firm and the day-to-day work trainees and associates undertake.
Everything Else
We were paid very generously by DLA Piper, and equally we were reimbursed expenses for any travel and had numerous social activities paid for us. It was clear that DLA was committed to investing in us!
There were an abundance of opportunities to meet new people at the firm. A whole range of different social events were organised by the Graduate Recruitment Team, with some including dinner with Partners, the Office Summer Party, and a casual social with the trainees and NQ's.
Incredible. It is clear that the Graduate Recruitment Team put a lot of planning into the activities we undertook, and most definitely took it to the next level!
There are a number of different activities that employees get involved in outside of work. This wasn't overly mentioned, as of course it is not the main focus of the internship scheme, so maybe a little more detail on these facts would be great - but a very minor critique!
One of the best experiences of my life so far - I would highly recommend this! Many thanks to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and all involved in putting it together!
