The Role
working here at EDF has been very enjoyable, i have learned more in this last 11 months than the previous 5 years of college and univeristy. it has given me real world context to all of the academic theory that i have encountered in further education. it has also been good to get back into full time employment after so many years studying.
the engineers at work have been very welcoming and inclusive, but it took me a few weeks to settle in with regards to work tasks and feeling like i was contributing. after that period i was able to be given tasks to complete like any other engineeer and there was a good support system within the team to enable me to contribute.
as previoulsy mentioned in the last comment there was a great support network within the team, as an engineer there are already steps in place to ensure peer checking is part of the design process and on top of that there is a mentor/mentee relationship with most tasks for new starts.
due to my inexperince in the beginning and needing to become familiar with all the different aspects of the role there were times initially that i felt a little under utilised, but this was due to my inability rather than lack of structure or support, once i became more confidetn with tasks there were few times i felt underused.
again, initially there was a settling in period, but once i had proven my ability through a few tasks i became a regular member of the team which meant that i was given tasks to complete with deadlines similiar to the other engineers, whilst support was there if required i was able to start and finish projects throughout the placement.
the amount of experience i recieved including the support and training wil enable me to not only complete my honours year with a better real world understanding of the theory, it will also enable me to continue working with EDF Energy as a Contractor whilst studying for my final year.
The Company
very professional atmosphere, relaxed and supportive but restrained which was to be expected for an engineering office in such a large company with responsibilty for overseeing nuclear power stations and all of the rules and regulations that come with it. there was a friendly atmospshere which was conducive to feeling part of the team.
from the first moment i was able to see the progressi0n throughout the year, with a few tasks already allocated to me to be completed during my time, and new tasks added once i had shown ability in these areas. also one of the reasons i was asked to stay on was the skills i showed from the structured prgression.
the company invested lots of time and effort to improve my skill set, including paying for me to travel to sites with senior engineers, an induction event fully funded down south to inspire me and inform me of EDf Energy as a company and inclduing me in conference events. not to mention all of the invaluable experience i gained working with senoir engineers who have been working in the indusrty for over 40 years.

Working from home
as i have previously mentioned, i have been asked by my line manager to not only apply for the graduate scheme starting in 2019 once my honours year is over but also to be employed fulltime as an electrical design engineer in a contracting role. this means i will have a job regardless of any fulltime staffing role becoming free.
The Culture
as mentioned previously, this is a very professional workplace with a varied and inclusive workforce. due to the age differences though and most of the team being more mature there wasn't a big party atomsphere. there were organised events for team buildfing but this was restriceted due to how much travel there was for some of the engineers too.
east kilbride is a busy area with shops and food places locally whic hgave me a varied option for lunch etc. i chose to take a packed lunch in with me though which kept costs down and ensured i could make ends meet. it was like any other location in glasgow.
i have no idea. i didnt socialise within this area. mostly because i am a 39 year old man who has children and a fulltime job. there are clubs and resterarunts located within the area and these can be found in google maps with reviews and useful hints and tips.
EDF Eenrgy encourage you to be a contributing memeber of the local community, through charity volunteering, working as a STEM ambassador and volunteering to help in local schemss such as a community garden etc. there is also a recommendation to take a walk during lunch time to ensure you remain health and active whilst working at a desk.
