The Role
I was placed with the exact team I wanted to work with. The Head of Emerging Talent really took our preferences into account when placing us with teams. My fellow interns also had very similar stories. The work I was doing was very interesting and stimulating. I have heard from friends at other banks that they were given busy work. At UBS, we were not just interns but an integral part of the team.
On the very first day on the desk, my Line Manager gave me some work to do. He presented the work to a Group of Senior stakeholders (MDs and EDs). He introduced me, gave me credit for the work I did. This level of acknowledgement continued throughout the internship. I was given autonomy over my time and projects. I felt trusted and valued.
My team was very supportive when ever I needed help. I was also allocated a buddy who was able to point be in the direction of experts, resources to help me complete my tasks. I found it very easy to approach anyone regardless of seniority to help and from my experience, they were always happy to.
It really varied. The first two weeks on the desk was spent learning what the team does and some business training. The rest of the time I was able to contribute, the work load was healthy. I was actively encouraged to network and spend some time on personal development using the online learning platform.
I was given as much responsibility as the other members of my team. There was no real hierarchy within my team. This is something I really liked. This allowed me to prove myself as a dependable team member. There were several opportunities to this this during the internship. I was personally responsible for building some reports for senior management. Of course my work was reviewed by my Line Manger, during this review session, he gave me constructive feedback. As the weeks progressed, the review sessions became shorter.
Working in a team that is implementing automation across the bank, I learned a great deal about how to automate some of my daily processes. In addition to this some of the projects I worked on during the internship gave me inspiration for my Final year project (dissertation) at university.I learned how to build software agents (Robots) to perform tasks just like humans would.
The Company
It was very chilled. You can tell people here are massively intelligent and dedicated. There was also a vibe that they didn't take themselves too seriously. There is a preference for face to face meetings and collaboration, you'll often find people huddled together discussing and working with each other. The hot-desk system also fostered a very friendly atmosphere as you will move around a lot and meet different people.
It was very evident that a lot of thought was put into the intern experience. The team placement was well thought out and design to help you thrive and be at your best. The networking opportunities and the speaker series were good breaks away from work. It also provided an opportunity to get some face time with really senior people and learn form their experience. Some areas for improvement would be the pre-internship experience. An intern meet up would be nice.
We were given access to UBS university (An online learning platform) We also had access to Coursera- I made full used of this and took a machine learning course. We had access to contact anyone in the firm even the CEO and get coffee with them to learn from their experience. We also learned about the Graduate training program and the JUMP program to help develop your career after completing the graduate role.

Working from home
I have loved interning at UBS, the culture is great! the people are nice and you can tell they genuinely care about building us up as individuals and leaders within the business. There is a very well structured pipeline for progression. Lots of exciting perks such as working from home!
The Culture
There was definitely a good bond in the intern cohort. We are all university students and didn't shy away from the social with free drinks. We hung out together, breakfasts, lunches, dinner etc, we got along and that was really another factor in making the internship enjoyable. Some of us met up on weekends which was fun!
Living in London is clearly costly, to thrive, you'll need to plan ahead. Things like doing you shopping in bulk, bringing in your lunches from home can save you a lot of money. Also buying a travel card(33% discount for students) can also save you a lot. London is expensive but it is very possible to live comfortably here. Don't let the costs deter you! London is a great city!
It is London, Lots of fun things to do as a student.
There is a big push on volunteering and giving back to the community. UBS built a school that they encourage employees to go volunteer at. Lots of employee Networks and event to get involved in such as Women in Tech, Wine tasting, Netball, Golf, MOSAIC (UBS's BAME Network) and many more.
