The Role
I was able to learn a lot in a short space of time and meet a lot of people, which definitely made the experience enjoyable. There are many people who gave up so much of their time to offer me advice and support which has been very helpful to my overall experience.
People were thankful of the work you completed for them especially when you done things before being asked, or completed tasks before the deadline.
My manager was away for most of the time meeting clients, but whenever he was in the office he made sure to ask how I was doing. I also received a lot of advice and support from various other colleagues such as who to ask for work and how to ensure I make the most out of my time.
Initially I wasn't very busy as the team were too busy themselves to explain things to me. But as the days passed I received more to do and was busy everyday.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility, working for people of different levels of seniority.
I had already completed my degree, but this was an invaluable experience which will help me significantly in my future career. Since this was my first time working in the financial industry the training and experience I have gained will help me a lot in my future no matter what career I go into.
The Company
It was a very good atmosphere in the office. When people were very busy with a deadline, it was important not to disturb them. However when they had more free time people were very social, were willing to answer any questions you have in detail and offer lots of advice.
The first week consisted of a well structured training week, which included many training talks/sessions and social/networking events. Throughout the course of the internship there were a range of speaker talks and training sessions arranged so that we could learn even more about the firm and all the different desks.
The firm invested a lot of time and money into all of its interns. Many people were willing to free up a lot of their time to explain concepts, what they were working on and offer general advise. I was also recommended other people that would be useful to speak to.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
The future career prospects of the company are very appealing. There are usually a high percentage of the summer interns who get hired into the graduate programme and can also get an early start (which would be in January). After completing your two reviews and final presentation the firm will let the interns know if they were able to make it to the graduate scheme.
The Culture
Within the first week the interns had set up a group chat so that we could all stay in touch, ask questions and arrange to go out together. Every Friday someone would arrange somewhere to meet to get after work drinks and people met on the weekends too to go out together. The interns were able to get on very well with each other, which made the experience even better.
I lived at home with my parents so it wasn't a problem for me and I was used to the living costs of London. The food in the canteen is subsidised which helps with general every day costs and the firm will pay for the cost of one of your flights if you flew in from elsewhere. Also, the firm offers free taxi rides back home if working after 10pm and free dinner meals up to around £25. Therefore you will be helped with some of the costs.
The nightlife is good. There are many bars in close proximity, so the interns would get together and go somewhere nearby after work on a Friday.
There was a volunteering day arranged by the firm, but I was unable to attend since I had my graduation on the same day. On the last day of my first rotation the team took me and the other intern I was working with out for lunch, which was very nice to get away from work for a bit and speak to everyone.
