The Role
I had a great year at Samsung. I was challenged, met loads of great people, and developed a lot as a person throughout the year. My work was varied from week to week, and I was lucky enough to take part in various exciting projects where I was more involved than I had ever imagined.
My team were one of the main reasons why I enjoyed my year so much. From the beginning they invested a lot of time into me and gave me lots of responsibility which really helped me to grow into my role. I never felt like the intern or was treated any differently to those who has been there for 10+ years, and my colleagues had lots of belief in me so would get me involved in as many tasks as possible, as well as having many great social events.
My manager was very knowledgeable so offered lots of support throughout the year. He made lots of efforts to sit down with me 1 to 1 and talk through what's going well, what's needs work, and how to move forwards and improve in my role. But he also would leave me to get on with it if he believed I was capable which was good for me to build my confidence.
A large proportion of my role was supporting various other areas of the business, therefore, some days would be manic and other days would be quieter depending on how busy other teams were. However, even on quieter days, I always had plenty to be getting on with so it was never case of trying to keep myself busy.
I was given lots of responsibility from the beginning. For example, after being trained for just a few weeks, by boss went away for 2 weeks so I had to manage all the systems on my own, which was a daunting but very valuable experience at such an early stage. Especially considering our side of the team was just the two of us.
The year at Samsung developed many skills which I will carry forward into future jobs, and just life in general. For example, my confidence when meeting and communicating with new people has come a long way, from constantly working with new people and being exposed to many areas of the business. This will be very beneficial in my future career. My ability to work under pressure has also improved as Samsung is a very fast-paced organisation where you have to work under strict deadlines on a regular basis.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly in the office, they introduced themselves straight away and made me feel welcome. It was busy in my part of the office but was never too loud to get on with work, so I'd say the atmosphere was great. There was always lots of events going on in the atrium which was exciting when you'd walk through to go for lunch.
The placement scheme was very well organised, we had various development plans and learning days planned by HR. For example, product days and Korean culture days to begin with to help us understand why things are the way they are early on. Regarding my role, I had clear responsibilities and challenges planned out throughout the year, so I always had plenty on my plate which was good.
We had development plan, where we would set out goals and areas to improve, and Samsung offered various courses we could sign up for in order to achieve that. For example, I signed up for an advanced excel course in order to further my knowledge of excel and improve my efficiency in my role.

I will definitely look to apply for the grad scheme, however, since my previous role is just a placement role, I will have to consider which other roles will be available as a graduate. This means I will have to re-apply, however, it will be a shorter process as they already know who I am.
The Culture
Yes. There were 28 grads and interns in my batch, so I made many good friends and there was always things going on outside of work. I went on holiday with a few of my fellow interns and grads, also, there was football after work and various other activities to get involved in.
I was lucky enough to drive in from home due to the office being ideally placed and easy to get to. However, with the office being in Surrey it isn't the cheapest area to live in (as I found out from some of the other grads and interns) or to socialise in.
The office was in Chertsey so there wasn't much nightlife anywhere nearby. Often people would head into Clapham if they wanted to go out somewhere a bit livelier. There were shuttle buses from the office to Weybridge so that was easy to do and you wouldn't have to worry about your car.
Yes there was football on two days a week straight after work at a nearby school, and there was support from HR for people to set up other activities if they had an interest and others did too. Within my team, we had several dinners throughout the year, which were a great chance to get to know everyone better.
