The Role
I enjoyed the whole experience a great deal. Though as with every summer internship, there were periods of quiet, in general there was a good amount of work, and I learned a great deal throughout the whole internship.
I was always given work, and my colleagues made me feel welcome in the team.
I could always ask questions if I was unsure, and everyone made sure to explain tasks clearly so I was rarely completely at a loss of what to do.
I was lucky in that I was mostly busy throughout the day. Working on live deals meant there was always something to do.
When the analyst I was working with went on holiday, I was the only Analyst in my team, so there was a relative degree of independence and responsibility. In later weeks, greater trust was placed in me.
Given I have already graduated, the skills be of limited relevance to my degree, but they will certainly be of significant relevance in my future career steps.
The Company
Though my team was a comparatively small one, this created a tight-knit atmosphere, and I enjoyed being in the office.
The overarching programme was very well organised with lots of events for interns; at the same time, my team made sure to staff me on various deals relatively quickly to keep me busy.
In addition to the training week, my team also made sure to help me out when I was unsure.
I would very much like to return full-time, if I were given a return offer. The opportunity to work abroad, and in different areas of the business if very appealing.
The Culture
Though the internship was of course busy for all, lunch and coffee was a definite possibility with other colleagues. Plus, attempts were made to meet up on Friday nights.
I live with my parents. But, Canary Wharf is not necessarily cheap for lunch, coffee and drinks.
There are nice bars, but one is tempted to leave Canary Wharf on Friday evenings.
It seems to vary from team to team, but the opportunities remained limited for me.
