The Role
I really enjoyed my work experience. The projects were interesting, the colleagues - supportive, and the work environment - welcoming. I worked on different tasks every week and really got to develop my skills as well as broaden my understanding of the business.
I definitely felt valued by my colleagues. They were always happy to help, provide their advice, while also listening to my opinion. I was not micro managed, and I felt that my judgement is trusted. The team also organized several outings to welcome us and the other new-joiners.
My management and supervisors were incredibly welcoming and supportive. They took time out of their day to give me guidance as well as to simply get to know me on a personal level.
The workload really depended on the day, but generally, I had a good amount of work - enough to keep me decently busy, but not enough to feel overwhelmed. Although the hours could be quite long on some days, time really flew by since I was so engaged and interested in the work.
I was responsible for my pieces of work, without expecting others to review it multiple times afterwards. I was treated more like a team member than a starting intern. That being said, if I needed help, I knew I could always seek guidance.
My experience heightened my interest in finance, banking, and accounting even further. It also definitely made me more comfortable with tools like PowerPoint and Excel, and gave me a substantial understanding of the industry. Given that I plan to write about fintech in my final year thesis, this internship really will make a difference not only in my career, but also in my academic performance.
The Company
The atmosphere felt productive but light. Although people were busy, they wouldn't forget to joke around, have fun. The teams around were also very friendly and easy to talk to.
It was well-organized. After the week of training, we had a number of organized events for us to learn about different parts of the bank as well as meet new people.
We had a week of training which was certainly very helpful, although some presenters were more engaging than others. Learning on the job was definitely another great part of it, and our colleagues played a great role in enabling our learning and development.
Company Parties/Events
I'm not sure yet as I'll hear back later, but hopefully - appealing!
The Culture
Our fellow summer analysts actually were not as active in meeting outside or during work. Thus, I mostly relied on the organized events to bring us all together.
As long as you budgeted, the costs were definitely more than manageable given the salary we got paid.
I lived nearby Canary Wharf, and places close relatively early around here, although there are nice cafes to chill at during the day and nice bars for after work.
