The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement experience at FDM. I have learnt so much about myself, the way I work and more importantly gained a real insight into the field that I want to go into when I graduate. The company is really social and there was always opportunity to socialise outside of work which was a bonus.
Everyone in the company were extremely welcoming and supportive which has also meant that I have been able to get involved in multiple aspects of the business and network. Even senior members of staff around the business seemed to be interested in the work I was doing and often asked me how I everything was going.
Management were really supportive. I was constantly encouraged to get involved in other project across the business that align with my own interests as well as was allowed to take part in any professional development opportunity going. The Team Lead and Department Head took a light touch approach but made it very clear that if I ever needed help or guidance they were always there.
This fluctuated throughout my placement. There were periods where I was extremely busy and juggling many different projects at the same time, and then there were times that were a lot quieter. It really depends on the needs of my department and the overall business. There were definitely more busy periods than quiet periods.
During my placement I was treated like a regular member of staff. I was given ownership of client facing projects as well as conducting research that aided and impacted department decisions. I was never given more than I could handle, but I was always encouraged to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
I was fortunate enough to be able to take part in the graduate IT and business training that FDM provides as part of their graduate programme. This was a great opportunity as the training is industry recognised, and I doubt I would of had the same opportunity to do it otherwise.
The Company
The office is really social and lively, especially on Fridays.
The overall placement was well organised. It went with the needs of the business and adapted to fit what changes were taking place. During my placement there were a lot of changes to my role and responsibilities right in the middle of my placement, but the transition was fairly smooth.
I was always encouraged to personally develop throughout my placement, be it through taking part in graduate level training in the academy or taking on extra responsibility.

Future employment prospects are very appealing within the organisation. I have had such a great experience and would love to return.
The Culture
There was a great social scene generally. There was no specific social activities targeted at placement students however the company regularly had social events for all members of staff that placement students and interns were invited to.
I am originally from London so I had no living costs, however the general London Bridge area is quite expensive.
There are a lot of bars and pubs located around the office, and most Fridays we would end up at one of them for a few drinks.
Not so much during my placement. However there is talk of starting up a netball team and a football team.
