The Role
The placement was really enjoyable, all the staff are welcoming and willing to help and explain anything you need.
I was asked my opinion on things and was always welcomed to social events as if I was a permanent member of the team.
My supervisor was always willing to run through things with me and explain things I didn't understand. They were also pro-active in arranging things for me to do during the day, whether it be meetings or site visits.
I was relatively busy on a daily basis attending site visits and meeting and there was always follow up work to do in the office. When the workload was lighter, I had the centrally set project to be getting on with.
I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility during my placement. Being a non-cognate student there was only so much work that I could realistically be given, and anything above and beyond this was explained to me in depth and really helped with my understanding and personal development.
The placement has been invaluable as I move onto my Masters. I have learnt so much in the 4 weeks in terms of theory, but also in terms of client etiquette and how to deal with tricky situations.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was relaxed and casual and everyone got on really well. The hot desking aspect of the office was really useful during my placement as I had the opportunity to talk to many different people.
I was really impressed with the overall organisation of the internship. As well as a regional timetable, I was provided with a personal timetable which had been comprised by the members of my team. I had a mix of site visits, client meetings and desk work to do which meant I gained a good feel of what it would be like to work as a graduate at Savills.
The members of my team aided my personal development hugely and often took time out of their busy days to run through things with me or assign me tasks that they felt would benefit me the most.
I will certainly be applying for a place on the Savills graduate seem as it has been a very enjoyable experience and a place I would love to work. The work-life balance and social side of the job is also very appealing to me and the office atmosphere is enjoyable.
The Culture
Despite being on the other side of the office, I had a lot of interaction with the other Summer Scheme students. There were also internship drinks after work which were organised by the graduates where we all had a chance to catch up. We also had webinar which we booked out a room for and did together.
The cost of living in Manchester was very reasonable which made the placement even more worthwhile.
The nightlife in Manchester is good, despite not experiencing it on the internship. Social events were at bars after work.
There were opportunities to get involved in outside of work activities. I went to the 'Urban Challenge' on which was a networking event with other Surveying firms, as well as Engineering and Accounting. This was a great opportunity to get to know the team more and also socialise with other people in the firm who I wouldn't have otherwise spoken too.
