The Role
My internship was very useful for providing an insight into property, but was also a sociable and engaging month. Activities outside of the office such as "Rounders in the Park" and a watching world cup match with colleagues made the month entertaining.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. Being tasked with writing sections for reports and proposals which were then sent to clients made my work feel valuable.
80% of the tasks I was given had understandable instructions which allowed me to complete the work to the best of my ability. Occasionally I did not know enough information to complete work in the best way, but I imagine this is part of the learning curve and it was good to be tested.
For the most part there was always a task to get on with. Occasionally I did not have work to do but that was fine - I would look at research on the Savills intranet or investigate savills.com.
Being on the phone to agents, or completing reports/proposals, I felt I was given an appropriate responsibility for my ability and knowledge. It was nice to be trusted doing work which genuinely had a purpose.
This internship will not assist my undergraduate degree (Geology) but is certainly useful for the Real Estate Masters course and graduate scheme I am hoping to enrol in.
The Company
Amusing conversations on a daily basis. I did not feel isolated as an intern.
Regular talks from a range of departments and networking events throughout the internship provided useful information and a structured, productive timetable.
We did not have training as such, but professional skills were individually developed by working in an office environment.
Company Parties/Events
If I go into the Real Estate industry, Savills would be one of the best places to work.
The Culture
We did not have many events as a group of 20 interns so did not spend much time with eachother. After 4 weeks we will have been to the pub twice as a group, and I had a few lunches with the interns I befriended.
London is expensive, especially compared to the salary we were given. More than half of my earnings from the internship was spent on rent, and a large portion was spent commuting. Consequently the work does not produce much profit. However, I understand that internships are useful more as a gateway into a graduate job, then a profit making summer job. I would have made more money with a casual job but that would not help my career prospects.
London has arguably the best nightlife in the UK, which I tried to take advantage of during my time here.
I was invited for drinks a couple of times, and went to a rounders in the park social.
